I own a gerber ripstop, i live in charleston, SC, and i want to know if i can carry it on me here for both everyday use/personal defense if neccessary. Its blade length is 3" and i would carry it in my pocket.
South Carolina state law was amended a few years ago to make almost any knife carry legal so long as it is not taken to a school or used in the commission of a crime. http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t16c023.htm
However, Charlestown does still have a [rather outdated] law on the books:
Sec. 21-215. - Carrying concealed ice pick or knife with blade exceeding three inches in length.
It shall be unlawful for any person to carry concealed about his person any ice pick, razor, knife, dagger or stiletto, the blade of which exceeds three (3) inches in length.
It says exceeding, so it would meant more than 3 inches. This puts it in a very wobbly area. I do not own a Ripstop, so you would have to measure the blade with a ruler yourself. Ignore what the manufacturer says, measure the blade, both the edge and choil, from the top of the handle.

My girlfriend and I went to Charleston last October for vacation, driving down from Massachusetts. My SAK was in one front pocket and my 4" CS "Voyager" was in the other. I noticed a lot of pocket clips, so carrying must be popular there. Enjoyed eating that South Carolina barbecue and washing it down with the locally-brewed Palmetto Pale Ale!
