Can I do a secondary bevel like this (pic) with a file/files?

Note the secondary bevel near the tip on this old KA-BAR.

I have never done a secondary bevel but would like to try. Thinking I can do this with a file and file guide. Probably as the next step after I cut out the blank and before I do anything to start on the primary bevel so the rest of the bladeis still totally flat. Is that a reasonable plan? Is there a better way/tool to do this with? I thought I would avoid using the belt sander since it would not really be that much metal to take off and I want to avoid unnecessary oops moments.:o

Thanks

Steve

Don't know what tools you have, but I typically grind a clip like that after heat treat and after finishing the bevel grinds. If you're working on hardened steel, filing will be slow, if that's what you're looking for.

Its early for me here since it was a very long day & day yesterday.

I think you are referring to the Swedge or slight false edge or Clip as Jason called on the spine.

Ditto to what Jason said.

I do swedge work and all my bevel rinding post HT. I grind at a slow speed with a sharp belt

Thanks - really just fishing for a "procedure" here.. Steel would actually be Damascus but I might try it on a 1084 blank first, just in case it does not work out. And like I said, I was thinking pre HT, just after cutting out the blank. Files or maybe belt sander????

If you do it pre HT you are going to have to come back and work it a second time and the experience that Jason and myself have on making Swedges says work it after HT because that way you will only work it once on a thin piece which cuts down the SC%^$*( Up factor.

Thanks Laurence and Jason. After HT it is!
