Can I have a satin finish of sorts on my khukuri

Horn absorbs a small amount of the oil, and that seems to stabilize it from atmospheric conditions. Almost any oil will serve the purpose, except that some smell worse than others. Lard would probably be OK.
Another preparation that was mentioned a lot in the past, was Hoof-flex (Sp?), a product that is used to keep horse's hooves in good shape. Lanolin was mentioned too - that can't be suspect. Or can it? Are people abusing skin moisturizers now?

As far as HIs packing for shipping is concerned, it is very discrete. Nothing about it will cause suspicion. But then, I don't know about the level of security you are under... X-rays, magnetometers, khukri-sniffing dogs???

Tetsusaiga?

A possible source for ferric chloride is an electronics hobby shop. Some folks use it for etching printed circuit boards. If there are any around, try asking them if they sell PCB etchant. It's a brown liquid. I actually purchase my own this way as a shop is conveniantly nearby to me and they sell it for less than the hazmat shipping costs alone.

Vinegar before the ferric chloride, eh? Never thought of that. I'm reluctant to change my process but if Dan's recommending it, it ought to be good.

Welcome to he Cantina! I think you'll fit right in.

Great how-to's here, and a I have used a plain vinegar etch that I learned from Dan several times with good success. The Radio Shack etchant makes the whole process a lot faster though for sure. But so far I have only etched 4 knives, mostly out of curiosity to see how they were hardened, and one I polished out later after finding out what I wanted to know.

Someone did comment that a blade might be more susceptible to rust if satined, and actually in my experience just the opposite is true. The satin finish allows the blade surface to hang onto any oil much better and seems to protect the satin blades longer than the full polished ones.

When I got back from the SWKK I left a bunch of knives in a foam case for a week before putting them away. I went from the fiery hell of Gin's Arizona town to the sensible temps of the cool seashore, and there was some condensation in the case. As I started to put the knives away, much to my horror I started seeing rust on a bunch of them. I started cleaning them up, and found that every single villager or satin finished blade had not rusted at all, while every polished blade had at least some rust present, and in some cases very considerable rust.

I keep them shiny until they are used once, and then they get a green scotchbrite pad and WD-40 satin finish. Then they get coated with Rust Free before putting them away. (The handles and scabbards get ballistol.)

But now that you have your Balance, I'm sure you won't be interested in anything else from HI. All of us stopped after just 2 or 3 blades, and hardly pay attention to the daily deals anymore. (Except Eric, he just keeps going! :D)

;)

Hey Norm.. you must be joking about the 2 or 3 blades part.. :D most folks I heard run into 2 or 3 figures...:D maybe you actually mean 2 or 3 figures..:D

Just checking, the sweet spot, or the part of the Pen I should be chopping with... Where is it??? On the belly??

Hi, so does anyone know where the sweet spot on the Pen is? Mine is the 12" version and no, I have not got my hands on it yet...:D

The sweet spot is on the belly.
