can i modify my forge to only heat the edge of my knives?

If you like and prefer the result you are getting in your friend's shop with his OA torch, why not just get one of your own and do it in your shop the same way? Or are you trying to scratch an itch from an engineer/experimenter bug bite? :)

it would not pay for me to get my own torch set since the expense of renting the tanks would be way too much. it would be nice to figure out a way to do my ht with the forge the way i want to. at one time i even thought about getting several propane torch heads and making a line of burners angled together that i would draw the blade through. that might still be an option if the thick clay coating fails to work.

I have a mapp /oxy torch that I bought at home depot or lowes for 50 dollars. It may work for edge heating. The next step up is the porta torches. they have the bottles included and cost about 300 dollars at hd or lowes. Either case you will not need to rent tanks.

Look around. You'd be surprised at how cheap you can buy a second hand pair of tanks.

That has been my experience too. Plus, it is definitely a plus to be able to do the occasional cutting, welding or bending with the use of a torch when little needs come up!
