I am tossing around the idea of building a Electro etcher or just punching my name into my knifes.
I was thinking about just doing my initials but I feel it would be better to atleast have my last name on my knifes.

are there any good plans for the etcher? I read on here that 12v was enough?
what do you use for the etching solution?
Who makes good stencils?
Will they last forever?

Who makes good punching dies for a full name/logo?

I know a knife with the makers name are way easier to recognise but If I was to say go with my initials (EESJR) I would like to think they would be just as easy to recognize but would it make them worth less?

Thanks for any help!

I use a stamp from Henry Evers.Pricey but there the best.
On your using just your initials,if you can plug them into google and come up with you then it's ok,If not folks still can't find you.

Whatever marking method you decide to persue, use your real name. 50 years from now, some of your knives will still be around, so don't leave the owner's wondering who made the knife.

Here is a tutorial that is really helpful for building your own electro-etch. I built my own and it has worked great since day-one.

Here's the electrical diagram that I made, since it I like to have a "picture" and like to understand why I'm connecting which wire to another one.

Heres my little etcher instruction page, taken mostly from Chris Crawford's information.

Make your own. It's quite easy, and versatile.

Edit: The stencils won't last forever, but if you buy about 6 of them, they should last a very long time. Also, 12 volts is more than adequate, and is probably ideal. I used the 12 volt taps from the radio shack transformer, instead of the 24 volt because the higher voltage was burning my stencils.

Thanks for the links and the wiring diagram!!!
I think I am going to try and build one.

Can anyone tell me a good place to order disposable stencils from?
like ones that come on a sheet.

I purchased mine from Dave Badt at LectroEtch.com. He's the CEO there, and is very helpful. They are made from the high quality green stencil material, and I believe I got 6 of them for $12.50. He was so helpful, I bought the Hand Pad and some other stuff too.

Part One: Make a knife that is worthy of your name first. I just started this knife making hobby myself about 8 months ago. I ran out and bought a whole bunch of stuff because I was excited. I have a brand new etcher still in the box with stencils. I will use it soon, but I could have waited.

Just my experiance, not trying to be a smart a$$. Spend your money on good tools first. Or build the one on the Etcher Link, those are good solid plans.

Here is a link to Ernie Grospitch. He makes nice stencils.

Thanks again for the link to Ernie's stencils

Do I need to etch before ht or can it be done after the knife is ht'ed and tempered?

I don't know how it's usually done, but I was told to etch after heat treat.

bigern I have made a fair number of knives and havent etched or stamped one yet. I bought an etcher 8 months ago but I want a quality logo and a top end stencil before I make my mark.
