Can I reheat the edge?

Can I reheat the edge or do I scrap it and chalk it up to a learning experience? The blade is 1084, forged, normalized, and quenched at what I thought was roughly 1550F. The normalizing worked well with a notably better grain structure than my last blade. The knife cut well at first, but after a week of hard use, it dulls faster each time I sharpen it. It doesn't really roll or chip but kinda "flattens" right on the edge. I suspect that my quench temp may have been just a tad low. Can I submerge the handle in water and heat the edge of the blade with a torch, then submerge the entire blade to quench when the edge hits the right temp? Temper would be a torch along the edge and watch the temper colors. I know that this is a long way from the normal heat treat regimen for 1084, but I really don't want to loose all the work I put into this one. Is there any hope for it, or do I need to just ditch it and start over?

I'm unsure if you can do much since the handle is on .

But for next time just do a quick disposable handle
Like Nick wheeler does after ht . He throws an edge on it makes a real quick disposable handle and goes to town chopping stuff until he feels satisfied
That the heat treat is good

Sorry friend I'm sure those with more knowledge can hopefully help

That's what I was afraid you'd say. I even thought about the disposable handle while I was making it. Guess that's what I get for trying to rush it.

Yup. We've all done it or should have. You can break off the handle and re heat treat but you will not be able to get enough of the blade hot enough the way you described. Chalk it up and either do it right or move on.

Can't hurt to try. Maybe put the handle in water. Or clamp some aluminum to the flat near the guard to act as a heat sink. That said, I think the handles a loss.

It's not impossible but probably more useful and quicker to knock the handle off (I know it hurts especially after you finished her) do what you need to do fix the blade (Mabey test first) then finisher up .

If your carful you should be able to salvage the gaurd at least .

I'm looking for a grinder so I can start making mistakes with ya ;)

That's a nice handle. I think your idea is at least worth a try.
