Would love to see some Hinderer XM-18's. Especially ones that have off color grips or if anyone has the new 3" model.

Here ya go.

Hinderer_XM-18_Group.jpg

Top: 3" Gen III tumbled finish production flipper fresh from BLADE 2009
Middle: 3.5" Gen III beadblast finish production flipper
Bottom: 3.5: Gen "1.5" (Gen I upgraded with Gen II parts) folder, satin finish hand ground blade

Hands down my favorite EDC model folder. Having just realized that I love the 3 inch version also, it will rotate EDC duty with the bottom one which I've carried for years now. The middle one will either just be kept new or I may decide to try trading it some day for a 3 inch custom version.

Sorry, I was lost but now I am found.

Great pics guys. Keep em coming.

Ooh and I like the red handled and clear green one. Ohh and and and..

Is this your red handled flipper on the table at the Blade givaway?

Gosh I am jealous..

LOL, yes... The lower one of the 2 in red. :) BTW it wasn't a giveaway, it was a lottery to buy them. (you probably already knew this!)

If... say, you don't mind seeing photos of the same orange one over and over, there are a few threads with the BF passaround Hinderer over in the passarond forums. A good deal of photos, from all angles too.

Custom Gen 3 XM-18 w/ hand ground satin Wharncliffe blade.

Newest member of the family!

Here are my two Gen 2 XM-18's. The blue-black is 3.5 inches, the tan is 3 inches.

What a coincidence.

The red handled one was my choice if i would have won.

The tan colored on has a different blade than most I have seen. What do they call the other one..spanto..??...

What does Rick call the grind on your tan one?

Here's my Gen 2 with a 3.5" blade:

Is there a site we can go to to see what the differences are of the generations?

For instance, I don't know the difference between a 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen.

Also what years they were produced.

Would anyone know of an informative thread or website with the whole breakdown? Or is it all word-of-mouth?

Well then, you may remember this...

"What are you, nutz???!!" ;) ...said (yelled) to a buddy of mine who got his card called, but was going to pass on the last 2 available (this red one & a brown 3 incher). He looks around, sees me and asks, "Why, do you want it?" I said, "Yeah, why don't you??" LOL! He gave me his card, and I chose the red one after asking Rick if he was OK with that. He was. Believe it or not, my buddy entered Saturday's lottery and won again, this time he walked with a sweeeeeet carbon fiber 3.5" one with the new steel Rick ground a few out of. Damn he's a lucky SOB!

I'd say just look up threads with XM-18's and check the pix. Here's what I know...

GEN I: The "R.Hinderer" mark looks to be lightly engraved into the blade. The blade is hollow ground by hand with a satin finish. The top titanium liner was a half liner, the ambi thumbstud was different, and there were no slots in the back of the pivot screw for easier adjustments like the Gen II or Gen III has.
Here's my Gen I before Rick upgraded it:

Here it is after the upgrade to a full upper titanium liner and a Gen II Pivot screw assembly (replaced Gen I parts to the right of the folder).

GEN II: Has the full upper titanium liner under the G-10 for added strength, the newer style ambi thumbstud, the slots on the backside of the pivot screw and what looks to be a lased and deeper "R.Hinderer" mark on the blade. The blade is still hollow ground by hand and is either satin finished or beadblast finished. See Zephy5's post.
GENIII: now a mid-tech, the blades are now flat ground and are cut outside of Rick's shop, but are still sharpened and assembled in-house. The frames are still made in-house (I believe). The Hinderer logo is on the back of the frame with no mark on the blade (see kaizen1's post, 5th pic down) and the blades are either tumbled finish or beadblast finish. only a few are still hand ground, but they are usually for lotteries at shows.

I believe that this is all accurate info, but anyone who knows differently, please feel free to correct me and/or add what I may have forgotten. :)

I saw when that happened. I was standing right there in front. It was hard to contain myself when I watched you two guys. LOL!

I stood there for two days with this going ons. It made me sick to my stomach to see some people win 5 times. Even some young 8 years old girls , 10 year old boys. Made me want to cry. Then i see them for sale on these and other forums just to make a buck.

But in the end Rick noticed what i was going through and took care of me. That says a lot of what kind of person Rick is. Makes you like the knife even more.

yeah, some of that had me kinda gagging too... especially after seeing the blades up for sale here & there so quickly after BLADE. As for Rick, well, I don't know him well, but I like him a lot, and I love his knives... Been collecting them for a while, snagging them when I can, and I use most of them...

Hinderers_XM-18_Firetc_Firetac-E-1.jpg

...I also snagged a Flashpoint necker from him at BLADE (LOVE that little blade!!) and ordered that XM-18 fixed-blade version that was introduced this year...I forgot the true name/designation for them :o. He loves to hear about his knives getting used, and with the exception of the anodized Firetac Extreme (a one of a kind. see pic above, right side) and the middle XM-18 in my pic of 3, all get carried & used, at least once in a while. The other XM-18s get carried/used a lot!

BTW, I added info about the different XM-18 generation differences to my last post. I hope that it helps ya!
