can I stop at 120 before HT?

Yoy'd think I'd know this but its the first time I have had 120 grit in the shop.
I have my bevels at 120 grit now but I used to go to 220 grit because that was what I had after 60 grit.

I am grinding 0-1 stock removal.

I know, I know Mark! :footinmou Dont question master Williams but this young pup had to ask so his O.C.D. would go away :D ;) :D

All of the voo-doo magic will tell you to take it up super fine, but I typically grind the bevels in at 60X and then heat-treat. If I'm holding my mouth right, I may feel the urge to go to 120X.

I told ya 120 was good enough. ................kids.
:D This is where we need a <shakes head> smiley. :D

Being lazy, I take it to 400 before HT. What's the benefit of stopping early?

Then again, you can always profile and then HT and THEN bevel. I've done it both ways and it works either way.

Well,
What I was thinking was that after HT the steel will be harder so my bevels will be harder to goof up.

Mark,
You da man.....never shall I second guess Master Williams again
:D Told you I obsess...just a little anyway :D

Brian, just make sure any deep grind marks are smoothed out. They can cause stress risers. I've only gone to 120, but usually go to 220. Less work after HT.

I take my blades to at least 400 but most of the time 600 and then use PBC to coat the blade for heat treating. Blades come out of HT as smooth as they went in.
Check out Terry Primos's tutorial on Scale prevention with PBC.
I find it a lot easier to finish sand a soft blade than a hard one. Give it a try you could save your self a lot of work.

:)

I'll go to 400 many times just to see if the heaver marks are gone. it only takes a sec..
but typically you have to regrind to remove the dead skin anyway on the hi carbons so 120-220 is a good average :) even at 60 I don't think you'd have a problem Brian, but I don't stop there so I can't really comment on that. of course shining it up some times first gets me motivated some too. :)

I think I just read something on Fogg's forum about finishing to 120 or so and after HT there were weird lines running through the blade. I think the consensus was that the crystal formations were different around the grind lines than they were in the rest of the steel and sort of created, I guess, a bunch of "mini temper lines." I've HT'd 10xx steels finished everywhere from 600 grit to the ultra-deep lines you get when you hand file a blade, and I've never noticed any difference, so maybe the steel and if you forged or stock removed could have something to do with it, too. Just make sure the blade is pointing magnetic north and you'll have no problems.

point it south and you get, watswhoo zin paterning,
it's the reverse mosousouse efect, don't yeah know.. ;)

Anything above 120 is just showing off anyway :)

FYI- The Earth is presently under a magnetic phase shift. Magnetic North will soon be South.

Trizact A-100 (180?) is where I usually go before heat treat.

Mark-FYI when the Earth's polarity switches, the field shuts down for a few thousand years and then comes back up in the opposite direction. No one has ever observed one of these events, all we know comes from measuring the magnetic fields of rocks. Anyone that claims to be able to accurately predict one of these events probably has a bridge for sale, too.
The normal condition of the Earth's magnetic field is that it wanders around within about 10° of geographic north.

you dont need any urine or a virgin around?

Nick is still a virgin so he always has that around. Must be why is hammons are so nice ;) I had to Nick....he he.

I've found if you point the knife SSW you'll get a nice wootz pattern. If you point NNW you get the phrase "Chiro75 is the King of the Universe" forming in the steel, but it's subtle.
