Can i use a bench stone to sharpen these larger blades or is it bad for the bench stone and should instead get a grinder?

Sandpaper/mousepad is the recommended method. A bench stone would work well too, as would a butchers steel.
Grinders and belt sanders are not recommended and if used, should be used with great care. Improper modification of the cutting edge can void the warranty.

For big blades like khuks, i generally like moving the sharpening medium along the length of the edge, not the other way around. I use a hand held foam sanding block and varying grits of sandpaper, working that along the length, instead of dragging the khukuri along a stationary mouse pad and sandpaper. It's generally faster and less tiring that way. YMMV.

If you want a convex edge, the sandpaper/mousepad method is the easiest. However, a bench stone can be use to the same effect. On large blades, it really is easier to move the stone over the blade than vise versa. An axe sharpening puck is actually the easiest to use on a kukri as far as stones go.

On the BAS kukri isn't it a convex edge? I cant really tell

I was in the local hardware store the other day picking up linseed oil and I saw what is called a norton hand sander. I was thinking about something cpl punishment had said:

This lil piece of equipment has a cushion on the bottom of it that feels JUST like a mousepad. I think this could combine both the sandpaper/mousepad & give one the ability to move the sharpening "stone" over the blade rather than vice versa... Has anyone tried using one of these? I'm hesitant to post a link w/a pic as I don't want to appear to be pimping a product and don't want to violate forum rules... Any thoughts? I'm a newb so if I'm reinventing the wheel, sorry...

It would take me forever to find it, but i think i remember someone in the past saying that the sharpening puck worked well. I'm sure a norton hand sander would also be a good idea.

I thought it would be an interesting way of combining the best of both worlds... Sigh, now I have to rig something up to GENTLY hold the handle I've been treating since Friday...Yeah, I found some of the threads on woodchucking! :-)
