Can I use a Washing Machine Motor on my Grinder?

I have a line on a cheap 1.5hp single-phase 1,725 rpm washing machine motor......can this be easily mounted to drive my new Coote grinder? I bought two 3-in-1 wheels from Norm so I know I need 5/8" shaft.

Worth the hassle or hold out for a motor with a mounting plate?

I'm going to use the weight of the motor one a hinged plate as far as mounting goes.

There have been several people that have used them with success. If an electric motor works and has enough power it can be used for pretty much anything.

homemade mount for the motor.

It's probably an open case motor, not ideal for grinding metal but they can be used. Since you are using a belt drive you can try to configure your setup so that the motor is not directly in the stream of dust coming off the belt. The under-the-table mounting style might work best for this.

I have an open case Baldor on my Coote, I built a metal shroud that keeps the majority of grinding dust off of it and it has been going strong for over 2 years now.

If it is open case, you should blow the motor out using an aircompressor regularly (daily) to prevent metal dust buildup and you will probably be fine with it. If this dust builds up, it can result in a fire, as metal filing causes these things to short out and go up like the 4th of July.

Thank you guys for your input....(and the picture).

I was thinking two hose-clamps banded around it myself. I'm gonna go for it I think.
