can I use the leather that I use for knife sheathes to make a strop? what side of the leather do I use smooth or course

Both sides work, depends the type of and amount polish compound you want the strop to hold.
cool and good luckMy strop is a piece of Herman oak 8/9oz glued smooth side out on a piece of maple and loaded with jacksonlea green buffing compound. It works great.
I've got a piece of horse hide I've been meaning to make a strop from, just haven't got around to it yet
I will see if I can find some thanksIf ya can find horse hide veggie tan, it makes a better strop than cowhide veggie tan. Its a denser leather and doesn't roll over the apex of the edge as much. I use the roughout side.
