Or is the center bar of a wrought iron anchor chain, not wrought iron?

I have anchor chain from Hightemptools. The exterior oval is most definitely wrought iron and I've used a bunch of it. The other day, I cut the link further, and the center fell out. I threw it into my Atlas and walked away while it heated up, then came back to this:

I posted this on IG and another guy mentioned heating up the center of one of his links and having it explode when he hit it with the hammer.

I'll look at that puddle a little closer tonight.

Mostly asking because I want to buy more, but if I do I think I'm only going to buy "C" links that have been cut from a full one.

I have easily melted wrought iron in my little forge in the past. Once I pulled a hot chunk out of the forge and liquid just poured off of it. I’m half wondering if the silica strands of impuritys that give this stuff it’s appealing texture lower the surface melting point of wrought. Thinking it’s kinda like a built in flux of sorts. Have you ground into that little puddle yet to see what the material is. And the other question is there enough material in that puddle to make a guard lol

When I came back and saw the puddle I looked inside and there was like a glowing husk about the approximate shape of the chunk I originally set in there. I couldn't even pick it up with a tong, it just squashed. It was almost like what JT was saying where there was this framework of junk and I melted the iron right out of it.

If you knew what would happen , you could add a little powder...who know maybe new wootz steel :)

Could it be cast iron? Cast iron has a lower melting temperature.

you never can trust those metallurgists - anything can happen ! We were developing some high temperature alloy that turned out to be weird .It showed up well in chain in high temperature furnaces. The outside of the links were fine but on the inside just disappeared. It ended the project but viewing the disappearing links we thought was hilarious . Still air NO moving air OK :D
