Can my new sebenza stand up to...

stopped lurking & got myself a small sebenza with snakewood inlays & stainless damascus blade. I was hoping to use for my EDC but generally carry my keys, change, & knife in the same pocket, as the other pocket carries a smartphone with scratchable screen.

Can the sebenza stand up to being carried in a pocket with keys & change? How about just keys? Or will it get all scratched up? If it is going to get banged up not sure how to carry it....running out of pockets!

Also, forgive me not sure what they are called, the cylanders where the screws go through are different colors. The one towards the front is silver but the one on back is gold. Is this an error or on purpose to tell them apart?

Thanks!

The Sebenza will stand up to it, should only receive cosmetic blemishes from keys etc, the wood inlays should stand up to it, but didn't you get a leather slipcase to carry the Seb in, in your pocket?

I would not carry a snakewood sebe with damascus blade unprotected in the same pocket with keys and change. I would a plain one with 30V but not a fancy one. You bought it for it's appearance so why scratch it up? A basic fact of physics is that metal cratches metal, at least for the kinds floating around in your pocket. I would carry it in the leather slipcase.

Hi bspooky,

Congratulations on your new Sebenza!!

The single gold spacer at the back of the handle is normal for the fancy versions of the Sebenza. The standard Sebenzas come with a single blue spacer. You can order Sebenzas with a silver colored spacer.

As silenthunterstudios mentioned, these Sebenzas come with a leather slip cover. It should be in the box the Sebenza came in, maybe at the bottom of the box. It will be a big help in preventing little comsmetic dings from other hard objects in your pocket.

it'll take it, but why do that? use the clip or get the slip case.

a beauty like that i would not subject to the jangly metal things in a pocket.

btw, congrats on the score!! you have great taste!!!!

This is funny. I, too, just got a snakewood inlay, stainless basketweave damascus, small, classic sebenza! Did you get yours from True North Knives? Ordered mine of Saturday, received it yesterday.

I've looked at the Sebenza's for awhile, but never had the money. Well, my dad decided he's at the point in his life (he's 87) that he would like to give his kids some money to enjoy while he's still alive. Was a huge surprise. My wife told me that this was the time to get the sebenza--and make it beautiful one to always remember my dad by.

Mine is now my EDC. I find the knife rides nicely in jeans with the clip--I did take off the lanyard. I found the stock edge to be a bit obtuse, so I've taken it down to just under 30 degrees (included angle).

I love the knife and know I'll get a lot of years out of it. My dad taught me to enjoy my tools, but to definitely use them, and wear is part of using.

A small Sebenza clips nicely in the watch pocket of my jeans.
Or, I sometimes put it in a nylon belt pouch, in the horzintal mode.

I have mine up front - in the waist band with the clip. Works well, low profile, no damage and feels warm when taken out :)

And in minnesota warm is important!:D

Thanks for all the posts. Good to know the gold was intended!!!

As far as the leather slip case it was in there! Not sure how I feel about that as you have to take it out of the pocket and then take the knife out of it....but it would give protection some. Glad it was mentioned, as it is my solution for now anyway until I come up with something better.

And I don't want it dinged up, it is too nice cosmetically to do that to it!!!

As far as clipping that will work with jeans, but half the week I am in Khaki's and clipping isn't too much an option. Hmmmmmmm, wasteband eh?

SO, YOU are the one. ;-) I had emailed a couple questions about the two and found out one was sold!!!!!! Grrrrr. What made you chose the one you did? I was actually leaning towards the one I got as the blade wasn't as dark/pronounced in its patter which I like, though I bet many prefer the other way. Did you decide which one and why did you go with yours?

One thing that surprised me was a date of March 29th, 2006....it is already 1.5 years old!!!

This is too funny, two damascus ss knives at TNK and both sell the same week and come to this forum!!!

Congrats on the new blade. I don't really like using clips either and I've got no problem carrying around my plain small classic like that. I wouldn't want to do that to one with snakewood inserts and a damascus blade though...any knife will look the worse for wear if it's banging on keys all day long. How about carrying it loose in your back pocket?

Congrats on your Sebenza!

Personally, I feel the clip is one of the key features of the knife. It allows you to access the knife quickly, and will keep it out of the way of other objects in your pocket.

I would also consider getting a cellphone pouch and carrying that on your belt. If you don't always wear a belt, Maxpedition sells a good one with a clip.

My front right pocket is always reserved for a knife. Keys go in left front pocket. Cellphone in pouch on belt, or jacket pocket.

I was going back and forth on the two. I was leaning towards the one I bought because I did like the dark pattern. My wife convinced me that was the one to get. Mine has a "born-on date" of March 29, 2005. I've only been carrying it for a few days, but just love the fit and finish. When people talk about "locking up like a bank vault" they really aren't exaggerating! Definitely the most solid lock-up of any frame-lock or liner-locker I've used.

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine.

Also I think it's important to appreciate that the Sebenza has an open back to facilitate cleaning. This leaves the blade vulnerable to being dinged by coins. I'm thinking that is an expensive knife for you to be casually carrying it with keys and coins in your pocket. I think the one pocket for keys and one pocket for folding knives would be the way to go. The knife could functionally take it but why ding it up any more than you have to?

Honestly, I understand the rationale behind asking about this in a forum but . . . it comes with a clip installed that lets you carry it in a pocket without it falling to the bottom where change and other contents can ding the blade or even wedge themselves in so you'll have to spend time picking bits out of the knife to open it.

If you choose to not use the clip, there are belt sheaths available along with the leather case that comes with the upscale versions.

I EDC an inlaid classic on the weekends and use the clip and have had no issues whatsoever. I even keep the lanyard on to make it easier to reach.

Personally I find anything bigger than a Mnandi too big to just drop into my pocket.

might not go down well on this forum but a small sebbie will fit in a william henry large clip case.
I've found that by having the case in the pocket at all times the knife goesw in and out without the hassal of other pocket stuff moving around and getting in the way.

NB I don't EDC my sebbi for legal reasons :(

New Seb with nice inlays and a damascus blade and just throw it in the pocket with coins, keys etc.

Personally, I would never do that, but some people like to beat the crap out of their EDC and ship it back to CRK for a day at the spa. Only costs roughly $25 (depending how much work it requires) but to each their own. I use the leather pouch for my sebs and I got a medium William Henry slip case for my mnandi. Only problem mine have is pocket lint :D
