Can psychics really see the past/future?

I’m sure everyone has seen the signs for “$5 Psychic Readings” in their town or while traveling elsewhere. What I wanted to discuss here were your thoughts on using psychics for more than just personal entertainment, more specifically in police and detective work.

There’s been documented cases in the past where police haven’t been able to solve a crime, at which point they turn to a psychic for help. What I find the most interesting is when the psychics they hire actually solve the case.

What are your thoughts on this? What about using psychics to help solve some of the current investigations (such as the Peterson or Hacking trials?)

I’m not an expert myself on the topic, but I’ve been learning a bit more from a new show on Court TV called Psychic Detectives. It’s on Wednesday’s at 9:30pm in case you want to watch it too.

In the few where they happen to get lucky, they get a lot of press (which they mostly generate for themselves). In the rest, they quitely slip out the back door.

As my sainted father was fond of saying, "A sample of one doth make fools of us all." In other words, you can always find a case or two of anything, the proverbial exception that proves the rule. To reach any conclusions, you have to look at a large and general sample.

Years ago, I heard someone ask this same question to a friend of mine who was, at the time, a senior detective with the local PD. His response was that they sometimes bring in so-called psychics because of public/media pressure. But it's really just a P.R. thing. He'd never seen one do the slightest bit of good.

This particular detective, by the way, was a nationally-known expert specialized in cult- and occult-related crimes, usually murders. He was frequently loaned out to departments all over the country. That's just the sort of crime where you'd think that a psychic would be at his/her best. And yet is conclusion was that they're worthless.

They're a complete crock.

There has NEVER been a proven case of any supernatural ability by anyone when tested with rigorous scientific method.

It's crap, smoke and mirrors. If you're going to believe that nonsense you might as well believe in astrology!

From this statement, it is clear that you are a Leo. :D

Gajin has hit the nail on the head. There hasn't been any documented case of a psychic passing a properly constructed test of any sort. These psychics that claim to have successfully aided the police are generally found to be A) lying or B) lying.

Court TV should be ashamed of itself for allowing such garbage on the air.

If you want to know how well they can see the past or future, call them up and ask them why they haven't won James Randi's million dollars.

Those psychics who can really "see" into the future don't really want to make a living out of it. The reason is because if they see something depressing, they want to avoid breaking the bad news to the person concerned.

Actually, genuine psychics function in the no-time zone. That's where past, present and future merge into one. Our present form of science is unable to fathom this aspect because it does not have any principles or laws to explain this kind of phenomenon in a rational way.

So naturally, a lot of people are utterly fascinated by this so-called mumbo-jumbo. For those who know, it takes too much time and trouble to explain so they prefer to keep quiet.

Anyway, the bottom line is the future as we all know it can be changed. And it has to do with the present.

Everything can be altered. First, there must be a willingness and commitment on our part.

In the end it is reasonable to say - the future is yours to shape, my friend. :) :) :)

If they could see into the future, don't you think there'd be a lot more lottery winners out there?

Exactly. This ding-dong woman that I used to work with, constantly spent money on one of those phoneys. I finally had to play a "magic" trick on her to convince her that she was being horn swaggled. As far as seeing into the past...it's possible. Just pick up a history book. :)

There's a book, I've forgotten the author and can't find the book, probably "loaned" it to someone, James Glick maybe, his sort of stuff anyway, called "The Day The Universe Changed."

It's all about science facing and adapting to realities that are completely new, that shatter old paradigms, where there isn't even vocabulary. Relativity is a recent and good example of this. Relativity does allow a distortion of time not unlike what your're suggesting (though Relativity still doesn't allow a look into the future, but someone assisting a criminal investigation is, by definition, investigation the past and does not need to look into the future.)

The point here is that if there is something REAL out there that needs new paradigms and new vocabulary, science can adapt to it. Science has demonstrated that many times. This would not be the first time that the universe changed. So, the excuse that this is somehow beyond science's limited capacity to understand is just plain bohhhhhhhhhgus.

Precognition is a load of crap.

However, there is a lot to be said about prediction (based on past and current events), and the subconsious and self-fullfilling prophecies. For example, a psychic could tell someone that she's going to marry a tall, blond hair, blue eyed guy named Ted. If the girl believes this, you can expect her to do things like asking tall, blond hair, blue eyed people what their names are, look Teds up in the phonebook etc. If the "prophecy" comes true and she marries such a guy named Ted, that's not telling the future. It could have just as easily been Bob or Sven or Wainthorpe.

Miss Cleo, on the other hand, is the real deal.

There are phony psychics who make outrageous claims they never back up. The true psychic, however, has a mysterious ability to connect with your bank account.

Gollnik: I love James Burke, and the BBC-produced series they did on The Day the Universe Changed was terrrific. They show it in re-runs now and again.

If I remember right, the book version of "The Day the Universe Changed" was written as a companion book to the series, not the other way around.

The series "Connections" was also very good, but I think they did a poor job with "Connections 2".

I knew you were going to ask this!!!!

And I knew someone would say that.... not because I'm psychic, but just because someone always does.

But, that points out something. If you want to know what the future will be, ask a sailor... at least if you want to know what the weather will be in the future. Sailors are accutely aware of the weather. They can't always tell you why they think the official forecast calling for rain tomorrow is wrong, but they tend to right. Why? It's an accute sense of just exactly how the wind is blowing, just exactly what the clouds look like. It's not even concious. It's their mind recognizing patterns and linking those pattens with experience.

Is it some magical psychic power? No. It's just being accutely aware of something, of paying great attention to it. It's the mind carefully recording everything related to that subject and of forming links and patterns around that subject.

And that's what "precognition" is.

It's the wife who can tell you the moment the menu is presented what her husband will order even though he'll spend ten minutes considering the selection himself. Of course, he looks at the menu and immediately thinks to himself, "I now what she'll order, but what should I have... let's see..." They've lived with each other for thirty years and they are accutely aware of each other. It it psychic, this ability to predict what the other will order for dinner? No.

Good psychics, those who are able to occationally make a right call, are just people who are accutely aware of things. But, then again, that's just what good detectives are too.
