I have a pair of Buck knives with ASAP Assisted opening.

In the 2007 cat I see some knives with "LEAP" Assisted opening.

So, which tastes great and which is less filling?

What's the diff?

.

All I can see are the Leap knives have a lever on the back that locks them closed, and they only open with the thumb stud.
Also they are not metal handles.
Goose you should buy one and report back to us :D
They appear to have a lower price from what I have seen so far also.
I may have to pick one up now...

You guys need one of these 288 Catapults. Made in the U.S. of A. Made to fit your hand. Opens with the thumbstud, or your can grip the blade and open it slowly. The hard plastic handles have steel liners. The steel between the handles is just a release and lock. The real spring is on the underside of it, and operates using a lobe on the back end of the blade. I picked this 1 up for $33 shipped, and fits into my EDC rotation.

ASAP uses an internal spring---LEAP uses a leaf spring that runs the length of the blade.

LEAP is a much stronger mechanism(sp?) and seems a more rubust design.

Thanks to you both for the info and pics!
I think I will be picking one of these up!

Thanks for the pics Scott. So the Catapult does have steel liners? Never seeing one up close, I thought it was all synthetic like the Protoge.

Goose,

I had the same question when I bought my Sirus. That knife opens as fast as any automatic  I have and I really like the knife. Seeing the 288 from Scott has me thinking that I might prefer to carry the 288 instead of the Sirus due to the inhumane things I do with my knives (dig up weeds, etc  ).
The price is certainly very reasonable for the 288. Want to check to see what steel is used for the blade. I also think the 288 may be less filling.
Thanks again to all who were kind enough to educate us.:D

Yes, the 288 does have steel liners. They are hidden in a pocket under the plastic handles, but you can see them if you look inside. The mechanism is not as fast as the Sirus - it is meant to be a little friendlier - ie, it shouldn't feel like it's going to jump out of your hand. - Jim

O.K. Scott,
I NEED to get one of these! Tonight!!!
How does it open? Like your Sirus or rush? Does it always open as it should?
I like how the ASAP knives "jump" does the 288 seem weak compared to them? Thank you!

I plan on buying one tonight one way or another :D

I think the action on this is very similar to the now discontiued Kershaw liner action series, The pressure from the liner lock acts as a spring to open the knife when you push forward on the thumb stud......am I correct as I have not handled on yet?

I'm gonna look into it also; thanks for the info.
I have a Buck Tempest in 154CM which I think is an excellent AO knife. Really nicely made. (OK, I actually have two of them.)
Also, the Tempest is a slim and relatively light carry though built very strong.

I also like the way the Tempest closes - it almost sort of "snaps" closed.
Feels somehow like it's more securely closed than some other AOs.

(BTW, other AOs I have, for comparison, are the SOG Trident, SOG Meridian; Kershaw Leek, Speed Bump, and Cyclone; CRKT Hissatsu; & some others too.)

I'm thinking it's between the Sirus & the Rush. I sold my Sirus a while ago, but the Catapult won't leap outta my hand. Reminds me of my SOG FlashII. I've only carried it a week, so it hasn't suffered the ill-effects of pocket lint and dirt.

Thanks Scott,
I have about 2 hours before I buy mine ;)
I will see how I like it! For the money, I don't think I can go wrong!
Besides pocket lint is an easy fix!
Thank you!

One more thing... How much wide and thicker is the handle than a rush? Thank you in advance!

Well,
I just received the Catapult. First impression is its a very nice knife!
I like the leap system too. Not quite as forcefull as the Tempest but it opens nonetheless. I love the pocket clip on this one too!! The clip has a loop at the top so it sits lower in my pocket. Not too much wider than the tempest but still comfy in the hand and pocket! The mid lock is different to me but is very smooth to unlock. I have to use this one for awhile!!!!

 ...Jim...Is the difference in deployment force quite noticeable between the 296 and the Catapult?...I kine like the way the 296's , 297's and the 298's slam out there when ya open 'em...:D

I would say... Yeah it is quite different.
If you give the thumb stud a good push it opens pretty quick, but not like the tempest/sirus... The tempest/sirus can be opened quite fast with the "bump" on the back of the knife by the lock. The Catapult is blade or thumb stud opened only. I like it ;)

 ...Thanks Jimbo...I may have to snap one o' them up and give er' a workout...I seem to be on an "AO" binge lately...LOL...:p :o

I think its worth a shot! For the 30.00 I paid I would say it is definately worth it! I'll have to work on gettin' another (platinum) one with a standard (uncoated) blade. :D

Oh and thank you Goose and Scott ;)
