Hello All,

Some time not long back I purchased an item from South Africa. The Shipping was included with the item. DHL was the carrier and I was really pleased that they could have an item delivered inside (3) Days time. I was pleased and that was the end of it until today.

Today I get a Customs Duty Invoice from DHL? Hello what the heck is this? There is a charge for $11.00 on it and another $7.00 for payment differed. I never signed anything indicating that I was going to pay any charges. Why is tis addressed to me, is this a scam

I need some thoughts here all! :grumpy:

Well, Through my own research, Yes the seller deferred the customs duties on Me! Yep, I was not aware of this when I purchased the knife and it was not disclosed by the seller who has sold many items here. Shame on you, you know who you are. If I would have known the good deal was not. :barf:

However, the opportunity to learn something here is invaluable. Buying overseas? Investigate first!!!! :p

The seller didn't deferrer anything.
Any customs duties that are assessed are ALWAYS the responsibility of the purchaser.

Welcome to international trade.;)

OK then. On the invoice it indicates deferred. Who differed this payment, If I would have known I would not be additionally charged with $7.00 I could have saved myself some $

You are correct, you never called anyone a villain... however you did say:

"Shame on you, you know who you are."

That would indicate that you feel the seller did something unethical, which is clearly not the case here.

Your post was titled "Can someone educate me on customs duty invoice". By referring you to that CBP website, Thomas Linton did a masterful job of educating you. That page, for a government website anyways, is remarkably helpful. I've referred to it many times. I suggest you bookmark it if you are going to continue trading internationally, as it can help you foresee pitfalls before you set foot in them. Knowing the ropes ahead of time can help seller and buyer smooth things out beforehand, so that nobody feels blindsided by the regs.

Hey, you are already a better international trader, my friend. In my book, that education was worth the money. Worse educations are given every day for way more than $18.

Thanks for all the input guys, I have learned a bit more here. Didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers, just wanted some feedback. TD
