can someone explain the compression lock?

One thing I really like about the Compression Lock is the fact that some models achieve it without the need for a ball-bearing detent, using instead a milled section of the blade tang to engage the lock lever. (examples include the Paramilitary, Vesuvius and Gunting).

I am one of those people who can't stand extra little parts, and the fact that there was a little ball bearing in there, and that it rubbed the tang each time the knife was opened and closed, really bugged me.

I am a big fan of my linerlock Military, but I hope that one day it will come out with either a Ball Bearing Lock or a Compression lock. How about it, Sal? :)

The ball keeps the blade closed better. Many knives with compression locks are tip up carry and may open accidentally too easy (there has been a number of reports regarding this issue) :(

True enough.

I really like the ball bearing lock. The only knife I have that is so equipped is the Dodo, but I really don't like the Dodo's blade geometry. (I hate recurve.)

While I can't say that I know of cases (least of all with my own knives) of unacceptable wear due to other locking mechanisms (like from the ball bearing in a liner lock) I do like the knowledge that there doesn't seem to be a typical folder locking mechanism that subjects essential parts to less friction and wear than a ball bearing lock does. Think about it: the thing rolls along the motion of opening and closing. It's not grinding anything. :)

apparently there's been a lot of issues where compression locks have come loose while in pockets.

i'd steer away if i were you, at least until spyderco fixes this and makes the lock much more reliable. in the meantime, i'll stick with framelocks and axis locks.

Only on tip up ones, my PMillie locks closed very tightly. Takes some effort to flick out the blade

My Paramilitary had no problems opening while in pocket. I was also fortunate enough to take part in the Ti ATR passaround, and again, no problems with it even coming close to opening in my pocket. I felt the detent was fine on the compression lock models I've dealt with.

My favorite edc is a bm 555 mini griptilian (axis lock) and one of the main things that i dont like about it is that there is not much pressure keeping the blade closed in my pocket. It has never opened on me yet but i would be much more comfortable if it took more force to open it like if it had a ball detent.

That's disappointing, I've had my Blackout open on me in my pocket when the spring was broken - not pleasant.
