can someone explain this popular advice?

Never seen it.

Most cops are not knife nuts, and many are clueless. They will be seen comparing the blade to their hand width, measuring and remeasuring- (This happened to a guy I know) They didn't even know the laws, they were just trying their best to come up with an infraction.

ive never seen this, or heard of anything like this happening.

one incident with your friend does not mean this is a common occurrence.

It is around here. I have friends who get stopped all the time and the cop will take there knife and start reciting all kinds of BS like "you cant carry a knife wider than your palm" or "thats a switchblade, which is illegal"- about a crkt m16. I had one cop who told me I needed a Concealed weapons permit to carry an ASP and confiscated it. There is nothing more frightening than stupidity at work-especially when they carry a badge and a gun.

ok, thx for the commentary.

"all the time" meaning once a week? once a month?

is an asp legal where you live? in many places it is not.
