Can someone explain this to me? (Opinel steel question)

Thanks for the help guys, as always.

Don't remember the link were I dredged up the wrong numbers. Probably a fat finger mistake on my end. Good to be wrong sometimes.

Strigamort,

Are you going to try and Dremel a nail knick into that wharnie Opinel?

Man that looks like a fantastic carver... I need to do that.

I've kinda thought of a bunch of ways to make opening easier, but none really seem appealing. There really isn't room for a nick when the blade is fully closed. Had I not rounded the spine, there may have been, but I like that feature for push cutting as a square spine hurts the thumb after a while.

Here's the blade closed.

Right now I'm opening it by lightly tapping the lock end against something hard. The blade is not heavy enough to do it the normal way.
I'm thinking about cutting a notch in the back of the blade, here-

Lastly, I think anyone considering using an Opinel for (detail) carving should absolutely do the mod if they're on the fence. The knife works exceedingly well in this role.

Here's a spoon that I'm working on. Gotta long way to go, but the Opi is making quick work of it.

I'm thinking an 'easy open' notch in the handle could make opening that blade easier, as opposed to using a nail nick on the blade. Much easier to get done, if one were inclined so...

And strategically placed, the notch might also serve well as a comfortable place for a finger hold, maybe for your index finger as shown in your pic, Strig.

Yes, you may be best off just making a relief in the handle.

That looks like a superb carver, though. I need to break back out my Drake and cut up some basswood myself.. been a while!
