Can someone explain this to me?

My question is, both of these blades are A2 and both were heat treated at the same exact time and yet one came out the usual grayish color with rainbow in it (TOP) and the other blade is half like that with the upper portion somewhat the color of the steel when it first went in. (BOTTOM BLADE)

Can someone explain what I did wrong with the stainless steel foil? Or how I wrapped the blade? Is it because the blade has been buffed before on top and the bottom one wasn't? Do you guys usually use some sort of combustible in the packet. How do i get it consistently gray with the rainbow tones on the blades? Obviously the pattern isn't gonna be the same. Just makes it a lot easier to buff off and doesn't leave a ghostly pattern on the blade even with a light buffing.

Thanks in advance!

First check to see if your blades have an even hardness. (skip a file alond the profile)

If the Blade hardness is even, backtrack to what you did before setting them in the oven. Was one cleaned with Fantastic? (which can make some crazy stuff happen).

Check to make sure that your finish (post handle) will be the same by opening a window in the blades. If your blades are equal in hardness and the finishes in your windows are equal...you have no problems and can rack it up to the Knife Gods.

I hope I helped with your question?

I have found that the tighter I wrap my blades,in other word get more air out the less coloring and graying I get. If I really take my time and get them really flatened out ,mosttime they will come out without any coloring at all. So it just may be less air in the second one.

Yes! That is what I did. The top blade I just kinda crimped the edges and the bottom blade i actually used the roller and flattened out all the air I could. I will stop doing that now as I hate how it takes to the buffer after heat treatment. Thank you guys!

Do you guys use a combustible in the foil packet? (kraft paper, etc etc?)

I don't.and get very little discoloration,I know some that do and swear by it, so best to use 2 blades one with and one with out and see how it comes out.

Today I wrapped 5 blades and did not bother squeezing as much air out of the packet or flattening before sealing the other end and again, the results came out inconsistent in surface color once again! ARGH.

The 1/4" stock blade came out gray with rainbow colors and the 1/8 stock blades came out kinda half gray/rainbow and half the color of the steel.
