Can someone recommend a big knife similar to this?

I am looking for a big knife similar to the Ricky Fowler survival knife pictured below. What I would like(and I maybe I'm not being realistic) is something under $200 in tool steel, big belly blade that is pretty thick. I want an "end of the world" chopper with about a 7-9" long blade(I know the Fowler is 10") and maybe a slight recurve, that I can beat the hell out of and it will still come back for more. I do not want a Khurki. I was also looking at the Spyderco Forager even though it is not tool steel. Suggestions?

I think Ted Frizzell at MMHW makes what you are looking for. They are tool steel and tough as hell.

You may want to try a Browning Crowell Competition Chopper. Also I had at one time a Spyderco Forester and it was a great Chopper in N690 but I did not like the Handle Config. Take a look at the Ontario RTAKII also....

Ka-Bar heavy bowie if you decide to go cheaper. 1095 steel I think, 9 inches long and a 1/4 thick, decent sheath and only about 50 bucks.

Check out the Marbles Trailmaker:

"the Trailmaker features a beefy 10" blade (knife is 15.5" overall) made of high carbon steel (58C Rockwell Hardness)."

Info from The Oregon Knife Shop Website.

I have never owned this knife so can't personally vouch for its quality, but Marbles knives have a pretty good reputation, and it retails for under $200.

Kershaw outcast? Ten inch blade in D2. Handle ergonomics are nice too. Only 70 bucks.

Have you looked at the H.I. large Karda ? This one is 141/4" oa 5/16 on the spine and very sharp. Under $100-

There have been a number of good comments about the performance of this monster.

The alloy is 1085. Good stuff for a big chopper.

AG Russel sell it for ~$140

Look around for a Dog Father Combat Grade (DFCG) from Scrap yard Knives

http://www.scrapyardknives.com/

Their currently out of production however, look around on the secondary market you should be able to find one.

The Busse kin exchange is one place to look

You can also place wanted adds.

Stop by the forum and ask questions.

Also check out the warranty it's one of the best (if not the best) in the industry.

You sold me, Bors! I have been on the lookout for a good fixed blade and those Scrap Yards are the best value for the dollar I have ever seen. Thanks for the 'heads up'.

For around $200.00 I would be glad to make ya one from 5160...takes a beating and keeps coming back...10" blade with lots of belly and a decent handle material are not a problem in that price range

BUT

Why not just save up a little more $$$ and get the one in your post??

Eat Ramen noodles and mac-n-cheese for a couple of weeks and buy a big Busse. :-)

You won't regret it!

I am supprised, no mention of the Kershaw Outcast with D2 tool steel.

Check out David Farmer knives. Convex grind, L6 and 1095 steels. I have a friend who is really into backwoodsman style skills who says that they are the best knives he has ever had for hard outdoor use. And they are well under your $200 mark.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am really interested in quite a few of them.

I have this posted in another thread but I'll ask it here as well. No one here has recommended the Spyderco's I mentioned above, are they overpriced or under built in anyway? Anyone know how the N690 compares to the D2? I do really like the look and shape of they Forager and Forester, but I don't want to pay that much for something that is not worth it. I can get those for around $215, is there something that really blows it away in performance at the same price level?

You specified a chopper so your going to want the balance point (COG) closer to the point which will make the knife feel blade heavy. Most of the knives out there place the balance point (COG) closer the the guard. Something to keep in mind when selecting a chopper. If you were selecting a dueling (fighting) knife then you would want the COG closer to the guard (but not to close) which speeds up the blade.

The DFCG is made out of SR77 which is a Busse varient of S7 steel. It has reasonable edge retention there are better steels out there if this is your main concern, rust resistance is about the same as any other carbon steel, Where it really shines is toughness and shock resistance there are few that can match it. For a Chopping knife toughness and shock resistance are very important.

If you want to as someone has already said eat top ramen for awhile then get a Busse Battle Mistress. There made with INFI whice is very rust resistant, holds an edge very well and is extremely tough. Actually SR77 and INFI are pretty dead even on toughness and shock resistance.

Really, It doesn't any better than INFI and SR77 is a not to distant second. Add on top of that the simple guarantee which guarantees the "knife" for life" and you have a combination that can't be beat.

Thanks Bors, that is helpful, and the DFCG was one of the ones you guys mentioned that I have become very interested in. Is the DFCG different from the DFLE they currently have on their site? You mentioned that it was discontinued, did they change it from what is currently available?
