Can someone recommend a big knife similar to this?

Thanks Bors, that is helpful, and the DFCG was one of the ones you guys mentioned that I have become very interested in. Is the DFCG different from the DFLE they currently have on their site? You mentioned that it was discontinued, did they change it from what is currently available?

The DFCG has a coated sterile SR77 blade with a saber grind. What this means is the blade is flat ground to with in about ~5/16 or so from the spine. The DFLE has a polished SR77 blade that is full Flatt ground to the spine and the logo etched on the blade. The weight is about 4oz less and the balace point is closer to the guard. Both have the same RES C handle. The DFLE is a better balanced knife and quicker in the hand while the DFLE is much heavier in the blade making it better at chopping.

The "knives" link on their website lists the knives they have released not what's available.

To see what's available you have to click on the "place and order" link.

Currently their are no knives offered however, a release is expected in the not to distant future.

Up till know they have built a batch of knives and then announced the release on the forum. The knives sold out in anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or so, a few lasted longer but the general rule is they didn't last long.

Now they're going to post the knife (s) on the site announce the release on the forum and take orders for several weeks.

As far as picking up a DFCG or a DFLE you will have to search the secondary market for one. They turn up from time to time. I would also put out "Wanted" feelers.

Im gonna throw in vote #3 for the Kershaw Outcast...awesome blade for the price, and a chopping machine. I think I paid $62 for mine.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I am really interested in quite a few of them.

I have this posted in another thread but I'll ask it here as well. No one here has recommended the Spyderco's I mentioned above, are they overpriced or under built in anyway? Anyone know how the N690 compares to the D2? I do really like the look and shape of they Forager and Forester, but I don't want to pay that much for something that is not worth it. I can get those for around $215, is there something that really blows it away in performance at the same price level?

N690 performs on the order of VG10 / 154CM etc. Good for edge retention, but maybe not optimal for repeated heavy impacts.

If I wanted a chopper I think I would choose a different alloy than either N690 or D2. YMMV

What would you choose?

I am considering the Outcast as well, thanks.

Kershaw outcast? Ten inch blade in D2. Handle ergonomics are nice too. Only 70 bucks.

Most knife makers don't recommend the use of D2 in a blade longer than 4 or 5 inches. It is not really suitable for a "chopper." It IS one of my favorite blade steels for smaller knives, though.

Stay sharp,

For a chopper, I would be interested in either an alloy steel or a carbon steel with 0.6% - 0.85% Carbon. I suppose that if I really felt I needed a stainless blade for the environment that I was going to be in, I might look at 440A. But I rather not use stainless if I wanted a chopper.

5160 would be dandy. So would L6. So would 1085 or 1075. So would CPM 3V. So would the SK-5 that Cold Steel is currently using.
