I am making my first slip joint pocket knife. I would like to use mamoth ivory for the handles. I was wondering if I would need to seal or stabalize the ivory before putting on the knife? If so what do I use? Thanks David Jackson

Because mammoth ivory isn't stable unless very well dried and then sealed, you can have it stabilized. I've found the best results by sending it to K&G Supply www.knifeandgun.com. They've done a fine job stabilizing things for me for over 10 years.

For a small piece of mammoth, like a folder would need, you can do it yourself. Trim the piece to close to final size and shape. Place the pieces on a sheet of saran wrap and coat the entire scales with thin cyanoacrylic glue. Let it dry completely.Repeat until it will absorb no more resin.Sand to final shape and finish.
