Can stainless be forge welded to Carbon steel?

As I said the shape of the stainless striations on the blade are the result of forge welding and polishing. I believe what your saying is that the shape is determined by cutting the stainless steel before welding to the carbon. Is that correct?
 
I'm sorry, I guess I did not see where you said "forge welding" in your question to me..
I thought you said, "I'm curious, do those patterns come out naturally in polishing or do you have to do the whole clay covering thing like the Japanese? ".

And, no, some people create those undulations by cutting the steel AFTER the billet has been forged together, and then draw it out.
I do not.
The undulations in my stainless result from my drawing dies.
