Can The Spyderco Delica 4 in VG-10 Be Beat?

Benchmade Mini-Grips are nice........but I think VG-10 is better than 154CM, and I also think that the Spyderco's are lighter, thinner, and better slicers. ;)

Im going to have to respectfuly disagree with that statement, to me 154cm is pretty much everything I could ask for in a steel and while I have found vg-10 to be excellent, from my own personal experience 154cm is just the perfect steel for me.

I really like Spyderco and have had my fair share, but have never kept an Endura or Delica, though I can't seem to give up my Buck 112's or 110's which IMHO are in the same catagory...So for ME: Yes! It can be beat...

Same category?! In terms of price and blade size maybe, but that's the only thing I think is even remotely close between the Spyderco Endura/Delica and the Buck 110/112. The Buck's are at least twice as heavy, they're not one-hand openers, they don't have anywhere near the same level of edge retention, they don't have anywhere near the same level of grip retention, they don't have pocket clips, they have completely different blade grinds, and they're made in a different country. I'm very curious to hear exactly how you arrived at the opinion that Spyderco Endura/delicas are in the same category as Buck 110/112s.

I think his interpretation of

Anything I'm missing? Anything that can "beat" the Delica 4 in VG-10 at its approximate price-point?

is just which do you like better at the <50 price point. So while they are very different knives, he considers their price to be similar enough to warrant a comparison.

which I think is fair. I have one of the old gibsons before they started carving them up on the inside (lulz at not having good wood for 2grand guitars) and it weighs in at 9lbs and the neck is a nice thick profile thats closer to 59 than 60 and I have underwound pickups to emulate how vintage guitar pickups have sort of been worn out and its just peeves my very good friend, fellow knife fan, and lover of all things ibanez. He has a custom shop one that cost him just about as much as my guitar did and hes always asking me how I can play with such a guitar but to me thats what I like.

It's easy. I have always used either of the two mentioned Bucks for my Yearly hunting season chores. I decided to try something new but not radical in difference. I wanted to try the Delica and the Endura in VG-10 steel and as I said before, "In MY Humble Opinion" Because of Overall Size and the LockBack Style of both brands I made my Compairison. Now I never put as many Varibles in the mix as mentioned by 3G. But the Light Weight I was not happy with and I am not a big Clip person for a hunting task. As I said though, IMHO I put them in the same catagory for Locking system and overall Size of grip and blade. They were to be replacements for the 110 and 112 but fell short for me. The knives were perfect functioning tools just not for me so the answer is still: Yes! The Delica can be beat...

I think even people who are not particular fans of Spyderco would agree that the Delica is a good knife. As far as it being "beat", that is all pretty much in the eyes of the beholder. Different people like different things.

The real (unintentional) problem with this question is that it begs for controversy where there is and should be none. Of course the Delica is a good knife. Of course there are other good knives at around the same price. Whats wrong with that? You don't like holey blades and black handles, buy something else. It's not as if your less of a man (or, as the case may be, woman) if you don't own a particular model of knife.

Well, I do a have a Delica (ZDP model) and I do agree that it's excellent. Now since you prefer to give a different knife, here is an excellent and very different edc in the scandinavian style: The Eka Masur. A strong blade of good and easy to sharpen 12C27 steel, a handle that's made of compressed birch which is warm to the touch and makes for a light knife, excellent ergonomics mean you won't accidently touch the blade, and it has a good strong lock. I also exists in a gift pack version with an elegant elk skin pouch. Finally, because of its elegant looks it sees quite a bit more carry than my Delica! Holding the Eka just once means adopting it.

I came home today with $40 worth of tips in my pocket, just about enough for getting a decent knife. As much as I think the Delica looks completely fugly, I'm probably going to get one just because it looks like such a fantastic knife.

The only, the only thing I can find wrong with it is the looks, and that's the only part that I can get over with my thoughts alone.

I also drive and Civic, talk on a Nokia, and type on a Thinkpad. It fits my personality, in a way--I don't buy anything that I'm not going to use every day, and when I do buy, I don't compromise.

the spyderco native comes close inmop. walmart sells the native for 40 dollars, and is the same size as the delica.

The Thinkpad is a perfect match for Spyderco. Ugly, utilitarian, but a classic and built tough. I love my Thinkpad and my military.

I use a Thinkpad at work and indeed it matches well with a Spyderco. Or a Leatherman. Pure functional rugged utility.
On the other hand my portable mac at home pairs well with an exquisite Laguiole !

Indeed, which is why I wrote "beat," in the body of my question, in double-quotes. (Sorry, meant to put it in the title that way, too, and forgot.) In any event: I had hoped that most would understand what I meant, and it looks like pretty much everybody who's responded did.

The real (unintentional) problem with this question is that it begs for controversy where there is and should be none.
Precisely. And I'll note that even those who've responded here that they don't like Spyderco knives, mainly for aesthetic reasons, admit that the Delica 4 is a pretty good knife (at least at its price point). TBH: I am not particularly fond of my Delica 4's looks. Wasn't when I bought it. But the knife just works too well not to carry it.

my first one-hander was a delica, but I think anything with a full flat or a high hollow grind beats them pretty soundly.

It reallly is a matter of personal preference. i love mine but don't carry it often anymore because of my Rescue/Street beat combo. that pair of knives is perfect!

Somebody will have to send me a Delica so I can make a proper comparison. Love my Native, though, and Tenacious. Now, make the latter in VG10, and the Delica would have it's hands full.

If you have never seen a Delica in real life, I have a feeling that once you get one in your hands, your opinion on the looks will change. Mine did; I used to think they were ugly until I finally saw and held them in real life. Same story with lots of other people.

Pick one up; I'm sure you will be impressed.

There is always someone that can kick your ass regardless of how good you are or how good you were . . .

No it cant be beat but it is easily contested. In its price range The minigrip comes to mind and i actually prefer it. Also the kershaw mini cyclone is close too.

My first good folder was a Delica 4. I could NOT stop opening and closing. It is an awesome knife. Thin handle, just disappears in your pocket.
Clicks open and closed very securely.

However once I got a few other folders I realized the Delica is not a great slicer. That short grind does it. So I belt sanded it flat! And did a ghetto dremel wave on it. Now it can't be beat!

I have a Delica 4 and love it(first and only Spydie at the moment). I was looking at the Tenacious, which is much cheaper. What is the general consensus on it? I know the steal is lower quality, but SpyderCo tends to make nice things, and I find that the Byrd knives aren't bad, especially for the price.
