I'm also curious about this being "hit by a rock". However soft the steel, this looks a little unusual for impact against a rocky surface. I've seen damage like this caused by a slower exertion of force, such as in prying or pressing hard into a small section of something hard.
At least you've made some progress and are doing the best you can. In time, I suppose that'll sharpen out.
