Saw this in the general discussion forums, i cant imagine similar performance with INFI and 420hc ....>> In use, the two knives below are more similar than you might think:

H., the reason I like tougher in fixed blades is not breakage, but chipping. PITA to clean a chip in a longer fixed blade. S30v/s35vn chip relatively easily, say when hitting some metal, or in a pan.

420HC is like stainless INFI ("A8 mod" below)

The idea that INFI = A8 Mod keeps coming around and has been debunked numerous times.

Complete misquotation. Please go back and read what I wrote.

420hc is one of the toughest stainless steels, Infi one of the toughest non-stainless, at a little more hardness. And - Larrin (and others on BF) say that INFI is a modified version of A8.

That's all I said. Carry on.

Blame Larrin :)

My overall point stands: 420HC is more useful than S35vn in a 6" full tang fixed.
Not if you use it to cut things instead of chop things.

I like Buck and Busse and think they both do a fantastic job of wringing every ounce of performance out of their steels with their heat treats. That said, I don’t much dig 420HC. At all.

Again, unfair to quote me out of context. I rather fix a chip in a 420HC than S35VN 6" blade. And that's what I said. Option was Buck 119 and 120, I suggested S30/s35vn for the 119 and 420HC for the General.

No. What you said, word for word, was “My overall point stands: 420HC is more useful than S35vn in a 6" full tang fixed.”

Lol, how could I quote you “out of context“ when all I did was quote your exact post?

Anyway, looks like you’re taking your lumps. I’m not trying to heap it on, just voicing my opinion.

I guess i was a bit shocked to see that jackhammer next to that frontiesrman cause they seem so different....

The OP is out of context, which is what annoys me.

Now, you'd rather have a S35vn knife with choil, or a 420HC without ? .... :) J/k

And here is my take on A8 mod vs. Infi, from: A8 mod vs. Infi

I'm sorry but it's true.
I was always curious about the rumors about A8 Mod and INFI and, in January 2020, I decided to find out for sure.
So I contacted Larrin Thomas and proposed to give him one of my Busse knives (a Park Ranger model that was not loved as much as the other Busse in my collection) and asked him if it would be possible to analyze the composition.
Larrin agreed and I sent the knife. He received it and tested the composition with Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES).
And the result is......A8 Mod !
Same composition so same steel.

Obviously it does not means A8 Mod / INFI is a bad steel (Larrin wrote that it's a "perfectly fine steel").
But we should all stop saying INFI is something else than A8 Mod.

PS : At the end Larrin decided not to publish his Patreon article about the INFI composition. If you are one of his subscribers you can read the article directly on Patreon. Otherwise I can send you a screenshot of this article if you want.
Look guys, OP speaking here: let's please not go down that metallurgy rat-hole, A8 mod vs Infi, etc. A8 mod has large chemical tolerances, Infi has evolved over time, Larrin has argued with Jerry about this since 2006, and several related threads have been closed since then .... In a nutshell, Larrin looks at this as a metallurgist, Jerry looks at it like a Chef of a good restaurant, two very different perspectives.

: : :

Etc.

I have been wanting to test 420hc for the last few months... 420hc is extremely tough and should be very close to infi and 3v

Btw so what if infi is A8Mod.... its a great mid carbon steel for hard use knives.
