I have an old burr king grinder and the 10inch contact wheel is worn on the right side more then the left. This makes keeping the grind lines even on my knives a little tough. Can I true the wheel or do I need to bite the bullet and get another wheel/

Yes you can have them turned.
Or
You can put a belt on there and turn on your grinder,Then hold a flie to it.
But be very carfull if u do that

A Machine shop with a lath and a tool post grinder works.
In my last job I had the axis to that equipment and it worked great.

Yes, you can grind rubber. You can turn the wheel at your slowest setting with a belt while grinding it from the inside. Use a sharp open grit stone, preferably in a jig grinder or tool post grinder mounted to an XY table, though you may have luck using a die grinder (or even an angle grinder) on a rest. However, it can tend to deflect a bit at the edges, leaving raised lips. You might try freezing it first to stiffen it up a bit or try a crown. I had to try it a few times before I was happy with it. Files and single point work too - but not as well. And your life insurance policy probably doesn't cover filing on rubber grinder wheels...

I trued mine using a 2" wide wood block and a 36 grit belt. I wrapped the belt around the block (about 4" long) and then held the block against the wheel as it turned. This assumes you can make the contact wheel turn without a belt in place.

Has anyone tried to take off the wheel, and put it in a drill press and hold a block of wood with sandpaper to it?

Rob Frink explained to me how he does it. Split a 2" belt to about 1/2" wide and put on machine. Adjust belt to one side or the other. With your tool rest very close to the wheel offer up a chisel bevel down to the wheel opposite side of the belt. Try to cut square. When one side is finished move belt to finished side nad continue with the other side. Try to take off very minimal material and go slowly with the removal. Assuming your tool rest is at the middle of the wheel be sure to have your chisel handle higher than point so that you are scraping....not cutting. It works...I did it!
