Dear spyderco, please make a ZDP-189 blade'd knife with something other than a back lock. Maybe a R.I.L. or even better something different like a CBBL. Different, new locks have always been your thing but there isn't a ZDP blade I'm attracted to cause I just do not like back locks, I just can't use them.

I love my ZDP Dfly but I don't use it, its just a keychain knife for me. I love how you can mirror polish the steel and sharpen it to <20* (inclusive) but I can't bring myself to spend top dollar on a super steel blade/high end handle material knife that's ruined with a back lock.

I am ignorant on this, but aren't all the Spyderco Japanese knives lockbacks, and ZDP-189 is only made in Japan?

But I agree, ZDP-189 is a great steel and I would love to see it in different lock knives. Even though the lockback does not bother me.

A lot of Japanese Spydies are lockbacks, but not all. The Spin, Cricket, Balance, Equilibrium, Lum Chinese, Junior, SuperLeaf, Double Bevel, JSK, Starmate, and Centofante Memory all have either liner or comp locks.

And to the OP, you could look for one of the Lum Chinese folders or Michael Walkers with a ZDP blade. Also, I would disagree with your belief that a knife is ruined by a backlock, but to each their own.

I know that these are not currently being produced but I found this one NIB a couple of months ago. Just a possible option, but I agree that it would be nice to have some current production knives with zdp and different lock options.

I don't see how a back lock ruins a ZDP blade though. I own a few ZDP Stretchs, Delicas, and Enduras. I cannot say that any of them are ruined by the lock. In fact, the locks seem to be well done, as is the heat treat, the ergonomics, and the cutting ability. A new lock type would be nice, but the back locks are good to go.

A zdp-189 Starmate would be nice!

Yes, it certainly would be. ;)

To specify its my opinion that a knife is ruined by being back lock. I'm not trying to convince anyone else to think that way but I just don't like how lock back's operate. Not saying they're poor designs or weak I simply don't like how they operate. To me the Caly 3.5 would be the perfect knife it was any other lock type, the lock type, the blade shape, everything else but it [to me] is ruined by being a lock back. Make that knife but in liner lock and it'd instantly be one of my favorites.

Other than that I know about the couple old ones but we need new, standard production ones!
Btw are the Lum's laminated or solid?

I have declared a personal moratorium on lockbacks. I've become very finicky, and the minute amount of vertical blade play that develops in a lock back is a total deal breaker for me. Deep down I know that the knife works just fine and is operating within design tolerances, but it still bugs me.

A well-executed linerlock (like Spyderco always does) or the CBBL are my preferences.

On that note, I think that Sal & crew should seriously consider bringing back the original C15 Terzuola folder in ZDP-189. Give it a similar treatment as the Starmate re-release, but with the high end steel, and they'd have a winner.

I have to agree here. I really like the Stretch and the Caly 3.5 but ended up selling them both because of the back lock. I just dont like it that much. A G10 Stretch with the compression lock would be so sweet.

One of my favorites, even got me a spare :D My Lum is VG-10 though

Sold my sprint CF Stretch ZDP because I didn't like the lockback. Oh, and whomever now has it, I just recently found the original box, so contact me if you want it. It was a collector numbered knife.

Does the lockback feature contribute to how thin a lockback knife is? If so then carry on! It works super well on the Delica, but maybe that's because of the size of the Delica, which can be one handed as easy as a liner lock.

Give me more lock backs. In fact, spyderco my request is all knives produced be only lock backs. Thank you.

dI have an Endura Wave that I bought in 2007 that has been opened and closes thousands of times and there is zero blade play. I also have a Buck 110 that I got in 1975(I am 48) that was used hard and opened many thousands times, and zero blade play. A well designed lockback is a great lock.
