Can you believe it?

I have learned so much about the art and science of sharpening and related tasks from the experienced people here on BF, for which I am very grateful. After learning so much (but with much more to learn) I'm starting to think that I've never really sharpened a knife, only done limited "edge maintenance."

My knives are mostly inexpensive traditional folders with modest steels that are used for daily utilitarian tasks (cutting fruit, rope/twine, packing tape, etc.) and for them I find I can achieve an acceptable (paper slicing and limited shaving ability) edge with just a few simple tools that will all fit in a single pocket: a Victorinox pocket ceramic rod, an EZ-LAP four inch, 1200 grit, pocket diamond stone, and an Opinel mini-steel. For a bit more refinement I have a strop made from a piece of carving leather glued to a scrap of hardwood plywood and loaded with Flexcut gold polishing compound.
