can you convert bench grinder to buffer

do a google for tapered spindles, it's what we use in jewelry. They are typically 3-4 inches long, the buffs go on and come off easily so it's easy to change them. My opinion on buffers is that you do not want more torque than you can stall by pushing hard. buffers can grab and throw things, be careful

I go down to 800 grit and sometimes 9 micron. Then over to the buffer. I use the gray compound and get a basic mirror finish. I do not spend too much time using the gray compound as it is quite coarse, and can cause orange peel problems if too much time is spent at the buffer, and the problem is compounded if one uses too much pressure and not enough compound.

Then I change out the wheel for the green chrome rouge. Rake the wheel and then load on the rouge. Use lots of rouge and apply it often. Again too little rouge and too much pressure can cause the unwanted orange peel effect. At this point the mirror finish will look good, if there are any scratches on the blade, then go back to the grinder and start the whole refinishing process over again.

The final buff is with the white fine aluminum compound applied to a loose muslin wheel. This puts the high luster on the blade.

I preferred to hand rub my blades out, this will get rid of the lump and bumps that grinding produces due to thickness of belts. If I have a order for a mere finish I will go to the buffer and utilize the Green chrome compound to produce that appearance. When I hand rub a blade out I take it to about 1000 to 2000 grit, making sure I am removing all the previous scratches from my previous grit. Very little buffing is required at this sage of the work. In the past I have tried to go from the grinder and then to buffer just to create nice shiny scratches then back to the grinder and work some more. Grinders for grinding and Buffers are for buffing and that's its.

I was at a knife show one day and picked up a knife on the table and noticed how great the blade looked. And being a greenhorn I ask the gentlemen the question.:)

And he told me how to do it the right way. So, that's how I do it here. Just my 2 cents have a great day.
