Can you define 'tactical?'

Sport knife or outdoors knife doesn't really describe either an EK or an Emerson. Both are knife brands that are used as tools with the main function of that tool being the protection of said tool carrier. See that's way to much to put on a box LOL. And as most everyone has seen if you market your knife as

"The greatest killing machine of all time! Used by spooks and spec ops world wide, currently serving in operations terminating ( read De-animating ) those who would put free peoples at risk"

Then your gonna be hated by both the knife and anti knife crowds. The mall ninja's will love you though.

Rampant popular usage of the term "Tactical Knives" can be attributed to the magazine of the same description, begining in the mid/late 1990's.
Otherwise, everyone was speaking in terms of "Survival Knives", "Fighting/Combat Knives" and even "Japanese Tantos"; that was right until the Emerson/Benchmade folder came about in popularity.
More spin and the surge of factory-made black folding chisel-edge tantos with one-handed openings and pocket clips became known as "Tactical Knives".
(Never mind that Spyderco clip-its like the "Police" was already invented and used extensively as a quick draw "Defensive Folder", but for a slick term!).
Somewhere then on, suddenly any black tanto got sold as a "Tactical Knife".
Of course a few months down the road, thousands of ordinary non-tactical persons discovered that the tanto knives wasn't particularly ideal for ordinary cuttin' 'n slicin'.
The EDC was born.
Which was mainly a civillian thing, normally manufactured with expensive "High Tech" materials.
These "HiTac" folding knives continue to outperform original "Tactical Knives" and shine with true actual everyday functions like letter opening, slicing apples and keepin' the peace!
If you think that the term "tactical" isn't marketing; I want you to think about the countless ordinary objects which have that suffix added.
For one. you can't look any smarter than having on some cool "tactical clothing 'n fine gear" to match your active urban life-style - thank g'wad for tactical game simulation like Counter-Strike.
It's no wonder the X-box is black.

The word tactical is used nowadays to be sexy. Back in the 1950's, if you wanted your product to sell, you put "jet" in front of it. Jets were cool, man. Calling a knife tactical allows the owner to automatically add an inch to his penis length. By the way, if there is such a thing as a tactical knife, is there such a thing as a strategical knife? I think the market is wide open.
