Can you ever be satisfied with one?

Nope, not another "If you only had one" and the SHTF scenario. This is about finding and being satisfied with one fixed blade for your outings. The one that is like your favorite dog. The one you are gonna take hiking, camping, hunting, etc: I have SEVERAL great knifes that would fit the bill. My F1 will take care of anything I need to do with a knife (yes I actually put that in print, it's not a screwdriver, prybar, hatchet or saw) but I have and have had Busse's, Mora's, customs and...............
Some I keep, some I pass on to someone else.
I mean: I have had more than one hatchet but my GB is the bomb and I dont continually look for another. I am totally satisfied with it. I have one folder pocket knife that I have carried daily for years and while I do see others that I like, I don't think about changing. However, I am forever trying new fixed blade knives. Have you found one that satisfied your itch and stopped your search? One that made you buy another just like it for a backup incase you lost it or ??? Made you consider getting rid of the rest cause you know you will not use them again?
Possibly its a gear buying thing. Buying new man toys does give a certain pleasure for a limited time but having something that you are truly satisfied with (this also applies to many aspects of our lives) and not on a constant search to find another is very satisfying and allows you to concentrate on enjoying that item instead of looking for a better one.
I have not been able to lock down on one yet. It could even be a piggyback rig with a couple. Have you?

My Busse Badger Attack TAC is always with me outdoors. In my pack or on my belt. I am very satisfied with it and wouldn't give it up.

Not one, but three, depending on my circumstances and what else I might be carrying.

1.) When carrying my kukri, my HI R-10 is the logical companion

2.) When carrying my GB axe, a Jarvenpaa puukko (the small knife) is the best choice.

3.) EDC in regular life, it's usually a Busse BAD (it also happens to be Chopper approved)

All three I've bought duplicates of "in case".

I wonder if what you're talking about is that subtle nuance of something that feels right. It doesn't have to be the biggest, baddest, technically superior or most expensive, but the one you keep going back to. I have knives, watches, etc. like that. Yes, I've loved things so much I've bought spares, but now I wonder if I'm not devaluing the primary object by having an identical backup. After all, many times the value of a thing is in it's rarity.
I too have had that unusual feeling of walking through a show, for example, and thinking all this stuff is nice, but there's not really anything I need. Don't let that imply I don't end up buying something. ;)

I'm satisfied with what I have. Now it's just a matter of "just because." For example:
me: Hun(wife), I really like this knife.
wife: I guess you want it now?
me: Well... yea.
wife: And why do you want it. You have how many knives already and I know you don't mess with all of them all the time. What could you possibly do with it that that you can't do with the ones you have? (the rant goes on and on) Can you tell me why you need THAT knife?
me: Just because.
wife: (bitch slaps me in the head)

The only knife that is always sure to be with me is a Vic Farmer. I am always switching around fixed blades and sometimes I will add a folder to the mix as well. I believe I have a few that I thought for a second that I didn't need anymore, but then I got another, and I thought the same about that one, then did that again. There is no '1' that is perfect for me.

Noooo, not at all.

Some days I feel like taking out my Busse.
Other days, the Fallkniven.
When I'm thinking cheap classic, maybe the Buck 119.
When I'm just plain feeling cheap, a Mora Bushcraft.

No, not really. Most of the camping and hiking I do isn't extreme, isn't off the map, isn't that tough for a guy my size. I've found that smaller knives work great for me. Right now, I might carry my Gossman micro Kephart, or my Blind Horse boat tail scandi, or my Dozier Buffalo River. So, one knife? No. One size of knife, sure. I prefer small fixed blades for most chores. I don't need to fell any trees, I have drift wood, I can use any of those three blades to get to dry wood if I needed to. A2, 1095 and D2, not bad steels.

I dont know if I actually have one. But I do have a couple that I always seem to go back to or just seem to get packed for a trip. One is my Fallkniven Idun. I really really like that knife. I always have a Buck 110 on me. Its either my standard one or the stag S30v from Cabelas the wife and kids bought me a few years back. I have 3 or 4 pocket knives that get rotated on a regular basis and about 20 that just sit.

i have a few knives....but i usually only carry one (besides my SAK OHT).

when people ask me why i have so many i let them know i like to have options :)

I keep going back to my Cold steel Master Hunter in Carbon V, And the only knife I like less is my TOPS Tom Brown Tracker. I dislike the handle on the Master Hunter, but find the steel and the blade shape much to my liking. I have several Swamp Rats and I Like them each for very specialized tasks, but have to admit My go to is the Cold Steel product.

assuming you are talking about belt knives and not edc's or chopping tools.. I feel like i could be percectly content with one knife provided I had spares locked up in case I should lose nit or break it... even though it has never happe ed it;s just part of my OCD

My Matt Lesniewski knives are very special to me, especially this one, which reminds me of me of a great camping trip with my daughter.

That qualifies. It's kinda like your favorite pair of blue jeans. I have a BATAC as well and like it very much but the boss street feels better in my hand. Boss street might be perfect for me if it had just a touch longer and a bit deeper blade. Now I am looking at the SAR4 to see if it might be "the one". The search is interesting though!

I know most of us have several that we take with us depending on our mood or the tasks we might envision. Just wondered if many guys find "the one" and make it their primary most every time.

Exactly

Not yet. But I think I'm getting close. But I won't get rid of the others though.

Right now, my Bryan Breeden SERE 5.5 sees more belt time than anything else. I look to that before any of my other knives. It's capable of doing anything I need it to out in the bush. I know this isn't a "last knife for the end of the world" thread, but if it was, this would be my answer. I certainly haven't stopped looking for other knives, and I may carry other knives sometimes, but if the apocalypse came, I'd be grabbing this one.

My backup fixed blade has consistently been my Landi MPS. He sanded the scales down to 1/8" thick, so it's got a nice, thin profile for carry around the neck or in pocket.

Lately I've been carrying a Spyderco Bill Moran drop point a little bit as well, partially because I just got it and I wanna play with it, and partially because it's so nice and light, and can still do anything I need during an average trip into the bush.

I do have a BRK Fox River in the mail that I'm excited for, and I imagine it'll be seeing quite a bit of belt time, but we'll see if it takes over top spot.

So, to answer your question, I could be satisfied with just one, but I choose not to be :D

over the years I've grilled a lot of chicken for school functions, shooting clubs, relay for life, etc. and I like to trim or 1/4 my own chicken. So not the heaviest duty, but the one I reach for is my first "semi custom" .. a 5 inch Randall #10 salt fisherman I paid $35 for about that many years ago. Nothing fancy but it works and I'm comfortable with it. I have a Grohman #4 I am training to take its place.. regards Les

I have way too many knives, yet I am always trying new ones. For a fixed blade, I own a very early CS Master Tanto that just seems to suit me. I bought it in '84 and it has performed perfectly as a great all purpose piece. I have had plenty of ribbing over the years from others as to this choice. It is just now going back for a new kraton. Aside from that, I do not even leave the house without my SAK. I have carried one since 1969. For the past two years it has been an Champ XLT. Each must find what works for them. It may not fit conventional thoughts or guidelines, but so what.
