Can you flick open your Benchmade?

Hi guys,

hoping that the Benchmade owners might be able to help out with this one...

I have a 707 Sequel coming in through Customs and they apply the flick test to all folders to see if they open using centrifugal force.

It is a bit late and I am just wondering if there is a problem and they have sezied it. I should have asked the retailer to tighten down the pivot - I guess you live and learn.

My question is, can anyone open their benchmade folder (new or near new), specifically a Sequel or Mini Grip just by flicking it without touching the axis lock?

Thanks for reading,

Cheers.

you have to pull back the axis bar in order to swing the blade free, but maybe the customs officers have seen how BM axis works before...
i hope it works well for you

The ones I have seen all flick open with out enguageing the axis lock. That said I have a very well developed technique for flicking knives open that many others could not flick open, so it may not be as easy for others....hope the customs officer that checks yours is not as talented as I am....

I flick open mines (a 530 and a Presidio) without touching the lock.

No problem and very cool

The 530 have a short and light blade, maybe like the Sequel or Mini Grip, and it flicks good.

Sorry for my english :o

I can flick open my 556S with extreme force, without touching the axis lock, but I don't think the officer would do the same caz it sure makes him/her look like an idiot if he keeps trying very hard :p

Ok guys,
thanks for the replies, si from the response so far it looks to me that if you use enough force or are practised at it then yes you can flick it open.

This is not very good news for me......

I don't have my Mini-Grip on me to check, nor is my sister around to check her 707, but from what I can recall it can be done with a nice, hard flick. If memory serves, the small knives take some significant force to flick open without touching the Axis lock, but the bigger models (from my collection the regular size Grip and the 710) take around half as much force without touching the lock.

I'm personally guessing that the customs officers use hard flicks when testing knives, and it wouldn't surprise me if they could get a 707 open. Maybe you can contact the dealer to see if some sort of deal can be worked out; but maybe that's just optimistic of me. In any case, I hope the knife makes it through customs and that it's just a little late for the moment.

I wouldn't have thought so, but I just checked 10 or so of my axis Benchmades, including a 707 and, yes, they all flicked open with a hard flick.

Sometimes I needed a few flicks to warm up.

Many of the Spydercos also flicked open, too, and Buck and Protech and Camillus and ...

I guess requesting a tightening of the pivot, if possible, before shipping, is important if that is a concern. :)

Eric.

I can flick open my 707 about 75% of the time without touching the axis lock and my pivot is set a little on the tight side. My 940 opens much easier, never fails to open in the same manner.

In case there are any customs agents reading this- no, I have never been able to flick open any Benchmade knife. That is not how they are designed to operate. I cannot open any of my axis-locked Benchmades without first pulling back on the lock and using the thumbstud. Knives that flick open are illegal, and I wish to remain within the letter of the law.

And what do you do there with non-axix benchmades?

My Benchmade 425 (Gravitator) opens extremely easy...

My mini-grip will not flip open without touching the lock. If I disengage the AXIS bar and give it a HARD flick it will open. It definitely is not the easiest opening knife I have.

Good luck.

Ryan

My mini grip can be flicked, but I try not to. The only benchmade that I have that cannot be flicked open is a benchmite.

Thanks for the replies,
I was hoping to ease my mind but after everyone's response of being able to flick their's open I am now very worried!!!
I'll have to leave it in the hands of the gods....(and hope it is a female officer that checks mine)
Thanks again.

Every axis lock that I have played with could be opened by flcking it wihout touching the blade. Its not always easy to do though, and I would think that the 707 with its light blade would be one of the harder ones to flick.

I don't have a Mini-Griptillian, but the 551 full size Griptillian practically jumps open, without touching the lock.

Good Luck,
-Bob

Have a Ritter Grip and it opens very easily with a flick of the wrist. My 707 is another story- it will open, but takes much more effort. Pull the axis lock back on any BM, and it will flick open easily. I also have a drawer full of steak and kitchen knives, any of which would make a more dangerous weapon than a 707- laws are tough to figure sometimes...

Thanks guys,
I can't make sense of the laws either, with a thumb stud ANY lock knife can be opened within a second, flicked or not.

I am hoping you are right tenman and the lightness of the 707 blade will make it very hard to flick open, otherwise it may be lost. How does the size of the 707 blade compare to that of the mini grip 556?

Cheers

I do not have a mini-grip, but it is my understanding that the blade size and shape would be very similar to that of your 556.
