Hey Bladeforums, my grandpa recently passed me a set of buck fixed blades and i'm not a big fixed blade kind of guy. Was just wondering the value of these because he had mentioned before they were valuable. Is there a market for these?
They look to be Buck Customs. The Akouna has iron wood handles. The dagger as well. That is some of the highest class handle material. Did the boxes come with them? Your G.Dad purchased good quality knives. DM
Welcome to the Buck forum... your first visit here.
I'm sure Matt (mbjannusch) was grinning....
I've been drooling over those sets forever...
Your knives are from about 2005. There were 3 knives in each set
401 Kalinga
916 Bowie
976 Dagger
And available in 4 different handle materials.
-MT Elk
-MT1 Buffalo Horn
-MT2 Ironwood
-MT3 Giraffe Bone
There were 100 of each except for the Giraffe of which there were only 50
Of course, you know you have the Ironwood. Without boxes, I would say Matt's estimate of $150 to $200 each would be about right.
Those were sold individually as well as in sets with the same serial numbers and sold thru Moteng out of California to resellers approx 8 years ago or so. As a set they most likely would sell for around $600 and individually possibly a little more but you never know for sure these days. There were I believe 4 different handle variations. Ironwood, stag, buffalo, and giraffe bone.
Wow its gnarly the buck forum is so close, pretty cool to see. I'll probably end up posting these so they can go to a home where they will be enjoyed more than they are here. Somewhere they can get the proper care.
Welcome to the Buck forum. Buck no longer has a real Custom shop and all knives are made on the production lines that all the standard knives are made on. If Buck makes an upgraded knife and sell it from their catalog they are called Limited Edition knives. If a customer places an order for up-graded knives they are called Special Order knives. Therefore, your knife set falls in the special order category. They are stamped Custom because they are not standard production knives not because they were made in a custom shop.
You have been given some good values for your knives. As your knives are missing their boxes and with that most likely the paperwork that was shipped with the knives. That said I'd go with the lower end of what matt said as a real current value. Just keep in mind your set is truly worth what someone else will pay for it and those values will go up or down on any given day.
