Hi there, I bought a second 124 after discovering it's the best knife ever made but I was wondering what steel it could be being it's pre date code? You guys are the best. Thank you.

About 80/81. Earlier than that has a swivel or holster sheath. Later would have resin impregnated birch handle.
Without the sheath the time frame widens to 73/81.
Sucks I keep getting different answers lol here's what someone said over at the Buck Collectors club said:

Steel would be 440C.
you sure it's 440C? How can we tell?

The only answer that can offer 100% accuracy as to the type of steel used in your 124 is one that would come from a metallurgical testing lab. Furthermore, you may want to exercise a bit of caution when expressing your frustration to the responses you have received regarding the makeup of your knife. Again, I would suggest you do your homework before criticizing the opinions of others that give their assistance upon your request.

Matthew, I think he's just exuberant over his model. As we're giving him good,, accurate information. DM

Hey everyone just wanted to thank you for taking the time to help. I'm just so excited. I held the new 124 legacy and it was too blocky and big, I think heavier even. This 1980 buck 124 feels like a stick tang kabar lightness but it's full tank and it's wider than any kabar and cuts so beautifully. Man I've been looking everywhere for a knife that fits all the notes - wood processing - food processing and self defense from animal or bad guy.

From the bucks website linked above, they didn't make anymore black micarda after this year listed? So all black micarda handles (from that time) were older than 1973??

I'm not sure what to make of the part about burgundy Micarta. My 124 has aluminum pommel and guard, and no lanyard hole. That means it should have burgundy Micarta, but it sure looks black to me. Maybe they only used burgundy for a year or two, and then went back to black? Or maybe the burgubdy is so dark that it looks black, unless it is sitting right next to one that is true black, out in the sun?

O.B.

Good call. I actually ordered a 124 frontiersman legacy 2021 the image they used on the site shows a brown handle, when I received it, it looked stone black. It's half the reason I sent it back. That and it felt Unnecessarily blockie and heavy. So that makes compete sense.

There are other companies (looking at you Pelikan) that have developed a "rep" for how far off the actual is from their original promo shots. Bad for business if it continues.
