Hello forum! So I have a little bit of money to spend on knives, and my current EDC knife (Gerber EVO) is getting pretty worn down. I'm looking for a folding knife under 50 dollars that can serve as a defensive tool, and do general utility tasks (cutting boxes, opening packages). Can you guys give me some ideas as to what knife to buy? Thanks, peace out!

Check out the Ontario Rat 1, around $30, lots of color options. 3.5 + inch blade, good steel, 5 oz.
If you like the look of the Evo, try a CRKT M16 or M21, similar design with better materials and more secure lock. Lots of blade shape, size, and price variation among the lines.
Cold Steel Voyager line is good as well, comes in three sizes, and six kinds of blades in each size.
Cold Steel Ti-Lite is another option, though much less suited to utility tasks than the others.

Generally, any folding knife with a strong lock and a longish blade will serve you well as an emergency defensive weapon

Cold steel Voyager or medium recon
Kershaw Cryo II , Thermite or Blackout
Spyderco Tenacious or Resilience

I would recommend the CRKT Ignitor. Although its listed $60 dollars on the website, i seen the exact knife at cabelas for $50. I got it as a gift for christmas and I am in love with it :)

I would also say a Cold Steel Voyager. Get the Large version for a 4 inch blade and rock solid Tri-ad Lock.

Not sure what would be tactical by definition. Kershawguy has a dlc tanto zing for like 35 shipped.

I think the OP just means something that could be used as a self defense tool. Granted, any knife can fit into that role in an emergency situation, but a large blade with a reliable lock makes more sense than say, a sodbuster.

I have several in my trade thread. Shoot me an email, Greg. I have the Cold Steel XL Tanto and XL Vaquero among others. Happy hunting.

Just got an Ontario Utilitac 2- 3.5" coated tanto blade and smooth action (non A/O). Somewhat tactical looking but still very capable heavy use EDC.

Cold Steel Recon 1, Cold Steel AK47

for $50 tactical knives it's hard to beat Cold Steel

+1 for cold steel recon 1. I like the clip point. It was my first "Quality" knife, and what got my addiction started.

Hands down Spyderco Resilience, best defense knife in the world is a simple kitchen knife, Resilience is basically a folding kitchen knife.

Rat 1 wins this thread. Fantastic knife for 30 something dollars

agreed, heck even the Rat 2 & zancudo could pull this task off he he wants a smaller folder.

beyond that, like everyone has say CS recon, 47, voyager, & lawman are also awesome for this role

haha ya basically. also an excellent choice

check out kershawguy's blems. Blur, Blackout, Shallot, Knockout, some under $40, some under $30 even.

Cold Steel Voyager(Recon 1 works too, but I don't normally see those for $50, usually more like $70).

Thanks guys, I'm going to look into all these knives and see which one fits me most. I see that the Recon 1 and the Voyager, and RAT 1 seem to be the most popular. Is the voyager small-hand friendly? My hands are described as "childlike" :D
