Can You Identify It

Im in the same boat as k9, ive had poision ivy probably 50 times since my youth in scouting and i can easily identify it in the wild but i did not know that it had produced berries. Very good thread sir. I would definetly like to see more posts like this from you.

Excellent pictures, mistwalker. I'm going to save a couple for my plants data base.

Doc

Just wanted to add that there have been cases of people contracting Poison Ivy from 100 year old herbarium samples.

I am stabbing at my screen.

When I was 16 I worked on the grounds crew of the local college. There was a fellow entirely immune to poison ivy.
"Good in salad!" he'd say while stuffing a leaf in his mouth.

Wow, hopefully he never tricked anyone who was severely allergic to it to do that.

You just hit enter before I did. Somebody had to do it.

I do like this kind of thread.

Oh yeah, I always use a knife of some sort as a size reference, so I was expecting it from someone. Cool, glad you liked it.

Very interesting thread, Mistwalker. Thanks for posting it.

I learned to identify poison ivy from an early age but find as an adult I don't seem to be as allergic to it as I was when I was younger. One episode (I think Lincoln was president then) had the rash all over my face and neck, but not my hands. My doctor suspected that I'd run through the smoke of burning leaves that contained the plant.
As much as I've viewed it over the years I've never paid attention to any seeds or berries.

Thank you, glad you liked the post. Yeah, here it may as well be our state flower. I noticed the berries on it and poison in childhood, but I thought it interesting that the berries on poison sumac were so similar. I have friends who are ER nurses who have really surprised me with numbers of people hospitalized from inhaling the smoke in a year's time.

The berries catch a lot of people off guard I think. Most of the people I've ever shown it to have said similar words. Well...wild plants are a major area of study for me, there have been other plant posts I've done here, I'm sure I'll do more :)

Sure Doc, go for it. I could email you larger files if you need them.

Wow, I knew it had longevity, but wouldn't have expected that,

I'm from the west coast so we tend to worry more about Poison Oak! Hey Mist you got any good pics and or info on Poison Oak?

I learned how to ID poison oak real fast! I will get infected by it just by looking at it lol it sucks! :o

I started out more allergic to poison ivy than I am today, as have a lot of people I know. Which is interesting to me considering all of the information I have read says that most people will become more sensitive to it over time with more exposure. I don't use it for bedding or anything like that, but I don't avoid touching it if it is in my way either. Considering how much of it we have, it's hard to avoid here and still go to the woods. As much of it as there is on my land I'm sure I have been inhaling the pollen for at least the twenty years since I came back to this area, and I eat a lot of local honey. Some of my friends have grown more sensitive to it over the years, and they don't spend as much time outside as I do and I don't think they are as much into honey as I am. There may be a connection there somewhere.

Thanks Doc. Next spring's photos should be better. It was partially because of my writing work, and partially for the plant sections of my website that I upgraded my camera equipment. But I didn't get the new camera till summer...and was out of state for most of the summer...
