IMO the spyderco p'kal doesn't really need improving. this is not a knock on Ban at all. Sure if you just like having something tricked-out, go for it, but a LOT of thought went into that knife. If any changes are made, and it's not outright copied (again not saying Ban would do this), a lot of prototypes would be necessary. A LOT of prototypes.
And regarding "better" blade steel, I think s30v is plenty tough for the intended application, and actually has good edge holding too; I don't see the latter as even being necessary since it's kind of a "Use once in a lifetime" type knife, re: intended purpose.
