can you make mycarta out of construction paper

Thanks for that quote. Defacing is legal, as long as you have no intent of spending the money.

No no, did you miss the part about fines and prison? The way I read it, anything that makes the money unspendable or so you couldn't take it back to the bank, is illegal.

No more lighting cigars with $100 bills for me! :D

ohh! I read it wrong. I though it said
... except with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued...

Oh well... Maybe monopoly money?

thanks, ima try the vaccume bags, ive never used them before, how big of a slab can i get?

That's weird, the text I thought I was quoting is no longer here.

It's legal to reproduce as long as it is less than 3/4 original size so just scale them down to 5" long and print them. It would probably look better than full size anyway.

here comes the bad news bear
home vac bag food saver
there is little air in the matrix good on you but the fabric/paper to resin is way off (noted by the large epoxy pockets (home food saver not a good plan )

using $$ less you get shreds form the fed i would not even try
let alone the fact that the bills are mulit inked and coated to a blend of paper / cotton that you cant buy any place all i can do is wish you luck

also with the market being what it is if you want to stick $$$ together for scales im not worried you be around long there are far better ways to burn $$ these days

From What I know about boat building and my limited use of epoxy in knifemaking, the trick, other than vacuum bagging like people have mentioned (if it can get rsin to "wet out" and totally penetrate mahoghany and brunzeel plywood, then construction paper should not be a problem), it picking the right resin for the job. Epoxy is generally alway going to be stronger than polyester or vinylester, BUT it may not be right for your application. Also there are a goodly number of epoxy resins and also filler products for different applications. You should take a look at the West System instruction manual. it gives you a good idea of what each product is best for. From what I understand about the phenolic resin used to make real Micarta, you have to apply heat and pressure to cure it properly which you don't have to do with epoxy.

The problem with the currency idea is that it's printed on the surface and not all the way through. After all, the back side is different from the front, so when you grind it out you could have the front, the back, or somewhere in the middle showing.

I've wanted to do that with a patterned cloth. You would have to cut out the right sized pieces so the pattern repeats and then index it so it goes down lined up; AND it would have to stay indexed when you press it. I think those little cloth flags that get passed out at parades would be cool, or small skulls like I've seen on some bandanas would be awesome for the 3D effect.

Color bleed is another problem. I've boiled and ironed some cloths before mixing different colors.

thanks guys, i dont plan on making any out of money, i just have a bunch of that green paper, im gonna try to make a traditional layed slab this weekend until i can obtain some vacume bags, thanks guys. il let yall know how it went.

hi, i haven't worked with resin for 40 years (keeping my surf board together). what type of resin would i use for the micarta experiment? another thread here mentioned using a urethene system. do i use the resin straight, or mix it with something else? how much pressure would i apply to the clamps? i'm going to give it a rough-and-ready try. thanks in advance.......................b
