Can you petina a Busse or a D2 Vex? Is it the type of steel (I know its oxidation but...) that will take a forced petina well? Does anyone have any pictures or methods used?

I searched "petina" in Busse and came up with a surprising 2 threads.

I remember seeing a video on youtube and a guy forced a petina on a Bark River Bravo 2 with mustard. I know a B2 isn't INFI, but tool steels might act the same.

And if it doesn't work, all you have is mustard on your knife so just wash it off. :)

Yeah, I saw that. It looked pretty good.

INFI didn't take to cold bluing or vinegar very well when I tried it. I'm sure a stronger acid would etch it, but INFI acts a lot like stainless steel.

INFI, and D2 are about as close to SS as you can get, and won't take a patina like a high carbon steel blade will.
They may develope a slight hue, but not really a patina.

D2 won't even take an acid etch, and don't think INFI would either.

Darn, I was hoping to get a nice pattern on my Vex. It is already prone to rusting if its not absolutely dry.

If it is prone to rusting, I would give the patina a try. Put some dots of mustard on it. Leave it on for a while then wash it off. If it makes any discoloration or marks, try it over night.

Then repeat many times will you have a great pattern.

I have seen neked Infi discolor slightly with cutting pork etc before.

Mine did not.

One user,

Couchpox?? managed to blue his Sarsquatch, and it looks great.

Interesting. I'll give it a shot and see what the results are. I'll have to find that sarsquatch thread. I was planning on mustard and vinegar

Cold bluing infi decarb is easy.
It's not imposible with pure infi, but you need to let the gunblue more longer so it's more difficult to control (risk of pitting).

Sweat and body oils do the job but not in any forseeable fashion. I am considering a urine bath. Yes, I know that is freaky but those who know me would expect such. If it works, I will own the term "Piss Patina".

I have used different kinds of mustard and hotsauce on 5160, with great results, but never vinigar.

Never tried on infi!

Pisstina.

gross.

Admittedly. I have done patina on other metals with mustard, vinegar and so on and it is the acid that seems to be the active ingredient. Body fluids have quite a bit, especially urine. So maybe it will affect INFI better than the food versions do. The ones I have tried on INFI don't take well.

I just remembered that I cut some onions and potatoes that really had an effect on INFI. Might have to try those out on purpose. It was quite some time ago.

That guy would probably be me.. dont think anyone else did it..

A2 (barkies) take a patina incredibly easily..

3V, and Infi are incredibly hard to get a patina.. as is D2.. I only ever 1 time got patina on infi.. And It was after grinding the steel down.. so most likely it was all the infi dust on the blade that oxidized fast and reacted with the main steel.

D2 is also very hard to patina.. But I have found something to do it..
Find Any Plant in your locality thats like what we call Milk Weed.. When you chop it and the sap is while like milk.. that stuff makes steel go black fast :)

That should do the trick :)

Wow. That's sick. I have some milk weed on the edge of my yard. Yeah, your BRB2 came out very nice.
