I bought some micarta today, but its much thicker than i thought it would be. Can I just run it through a wood planer, or would that damage the planer?

It will probably eat you blades, unless they are carbide.
Try hand planing to see how tough it is on tool blades.
Use a router with a carbide bit. Clamp it between two pieces of wood to give support for the router base, and reduce it that way.

I chuck rectangles up in my mill vice and run a carbide insert type face mill over it if I need to thin a piece up.I don't think I would put it thru a wood planer.........but who knows .......

A surface grinder also works well if you have a belt conversion. Use some two-sided carpet tape on your chuck and a 36 grit belt. It is very fast.
