The title pretty much sums it up, looking into whether or not there are places where you can purchase laminated steel stock in various sizes? Been thinking about san mai lately, but I'm not equipped enough to try forging it. Basically looking for some interesting laminated steel that I can etch after making a blade with the stock removal method.

Thanks for your help!

I would contact someone like Mike Turner or Randy at HHH knives. Both members here that could probably hook ya up.

You can get it from the damascus makers as said above......or order it in Hitachi steel from a few suppliers in Europe ( which is what I do). Workshop Heaven in the UK carries a good selection and Dictum in Germany does, too.

I used to get san-mai made up for me by the damascus guys, but have found that most of the damascus makers can't keep the core centered well enough for my needs. I had a $1300 order where the core was at a diagonal. Other damascus makers have had less than perfect welds on the layers. These are great damascus makers, it is just that they usually aren't really set up for doing high tolerance san-mai.
On a camp knife or bowie, a bit of difference from the sides and a meandering junction line are fine. On a yanagi-ba or a chef's knife, the line needs to be fairly straight, and the core needs to be centered.
