I am a bayonet collector ( I have eighty all originals ) and a one off knife that I believe is original. I bought it at a car boot sale years ago.

The scabbard is mid green and plastic and the grip of the knife the same. The blade is 6.5 inches in length and the steel seems to be excellent quality.

I paid about $5:00 for it.

Could you please identify the origin of it please.

Thanks.

Thanks lads.

Seems it could be an early Glock then. At least I have an idea now. Will Google it to see if I can glean anything further.

Cheers.

Did Google the Glock Field knife.

You were both correct.

Here is a little about it :

" [/I]The Glock Field Knife 78 is perfectly balanced for throwing (though it's a nice knife, you might not get it back)
The cross bar protects the hand against injuries and can be used as thumb rest and as a bottle opener (an important feature in any knife!)
In addition to the above, Glock knives are sturdy enough to break windows or ammuntion boxes, requirements by the Armed Forces among many others.
Material know-how from the pistol development guarantees durability and reliability.
WEIGHT: 206 g / 7.27 oz
GRIP: Polymer (Available in Black or Olive)
BLADE: Spring steel HRC55, phosphate-treated[/I]".

Thanks again.

The lower guard is bend towards the hand, while current production points towards the edge.
Other changes are more obvious.
Please note the cap lifter is still the same. ;)

As an older version it might have a bit of collectors premium value. Nice to see an older version. A lot were made, a lot still are, but they get used and abused. Not of any high value as they were inexpensive to start with.

They are tough. I throw them and they do last a year or so. Best bit is the blades survive, though the plastic handles eventually succumb to smashing into hard stuff. As a knife they are great for getting mud out of tank tracks as they are cheap and pointy. They do take an edge though its a bit on the soft side and will take damage. They will bend before breaking. One good point is they are pretty light weight and nice and slim attached to ones gear.

All in all I'm quite a fan, a disposable combat knife. In truth spend a bit more there are better knives to be had.

Here is a picture I made from discussing S!K GSO's, the other is a M95 Sisspuukko, and the Glock M78:

Good looking blade for $5. I saw one in a gun store yesterday I think it was around $45 but I didn't look too closely.
use it (or collect, in your case) in good health!

Yeah, you scored a good deal IMHO. Any decent knife for five bucks is pretty awesome.

Thanks lads for all your comments and to Junglefighter and red mag for giving me the answer.

It's cool but to say it has more collector value is a stretch as the Glock field knives haven't ever been collectors.

Anything cool from the past is collectable. Who would ever have believed bayonets would be collectable as many were made in the hundreds of thousands. Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it can't be collectable. Even junk.
Many very common items from the past are now collectable and though thousands made few survive.
A premium value might be only a few dollars.

Just thinking about Gerber Guardian range of combat daggers, or even EK's. Now I never rated either of them but somehow they have a collectors following. Early examples hold quite a premium.

You never know what will be next.
