I have made a few knifes with the artificial/plastic Abalone and the real stuff is a lot more colorful. But I am a bit unsure if real Abalone is too soft to use in a handle and thought I would seek your advice. Thank you.

P.S. If it can be used, where can I get some?

sure you can use abalone for handles, but it is not inexpensive.
While a number of knifemaker supply houses have abalone. I know
Culpepper and Co. has both the natural abalone and the composite or laminated abalone.
Joe and Kristi and the folks who work for them are good folks.
their website

Have you checked the For Sale Forum lately? There's a new dealer over there, Mother of Pearl, selling some, as well as abalone, coral and amber.

I love using the different pearl shells for handle material .
It works well and is stabile. As well it is a strong material and is like bone. I have several pearl folders in my listings to be seen at customknifegallery.com Please go to the makers and scroll down. I will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. Frank

If you work abalone, work it slowly, work it wet, and wear
a respirator.

id be happy to do a swap with you,ive got sacksfull of them.the biggest problem with it is you cant get a large flat peice out of a shell.
