Canadian Busse Buyers and Import Fees?

I'm just wondering if there is anyone here from Canada who has bought a Busse knife direct from their website and what your experience was. Did it get held at customs? Did you have to pay any import fees? I only ask because in another thread someone from Canada mentioned that they had to pay $130 extra in import fees for their Son of Badger. I'm curious to know if this a normal thing, or if they just got unlucky.

There are custom fees but they depend on the item. The 130$ quoted is steep but not surprising to me. I've bought several knives from Busse but can't recall the fees..... Too traumatizing... my mind blocked out that information ;)

Take a look at Busse's shipping fees. It add ups. You should not have any problems with the knife being held up at customs. The only Busse knife that can't make it through custom is the Argonne Assault....because of the brass knuckle type of guard.

...don't forget to factor in $$$ exchange....the looney isn't doing very well these days.

I bought a Swamp Rat Rodent 9 and at the end of the day, with exchange, shipping ,taxes and duty, it cost me $371.25 Canadaian. That was in Septemeber 2014.

On top of shipping and dollar exchange rate you pay:
1) tax - federal & provincial
2) customs handling fee - mostly when they open the package for inspection; this seems to be new as they did not do this several years ago

You do not pay duty as it is made in the USA.

10% of the time there will be no charges, it just seems the package is passed through and nobody looks at it.

So judging by the exchange rate for September 2014, you didn't really pay too much in duty fees. The extra cost just came from the exchange rate, shipping, and BC's 12% tax right?

I have already factored in shipping, exchange rate, and tax (12% total). However, I'm just a tad worried that when I do finally order it, and I got to pick it up I don't want to be dinged with $100+ in duties or whatever. I mean, I would still buy one either way, I just like to know what I'm getting into.

There shouldn't be customs duties on products made in USA due to NAFTA. I have read though that there can be significant extra charges if it's sent using a carrier other than USPS.

I think the duty fees where around $40 when I picked it up at the post office.
Make sure to use USPS, never UPS, I once bought an item and paid for shipping, it came to $60, UPS wanted an EXTRA $75...

Got that right Tom !

Our govt wishes to ENCOURAGE (read twist our arms) us to buy Canadian. Problems is, there are many goods that just aren't available locally.....

Just imagine how the 400 to 500$ B8 will end up costing us:eek:

It happens all the time ! I point out that duty should only be paid if the same product is available in Canada, and all I get in return is a blank look and a comment like " who knows how they're doing it today ?" or "hmmm, you may have a point there...good luck with that "
It's frustrating, sure makes the beloved Busse's very expensive up here...

yes there is sometimes duty charged
not always but be prepared
roughly $40 per knife was standard

it may help if it was clearly marked made in USA
but I doubt it

I have bought a lot of knives from the States ( no Busses but Swamprats and Scrapyards) and have never paid duty on them. If they get stopped you always pay GST plus a charge for the customs guys who are protecting our country to do their job.
