Hey BF,

I am wondering if there is a Canadian knife law app? Also, I know there are federal regulations of knife laws in Canada. But, is Canada like the United States where local laws heavily further regulate knives? If so, where can these be found? If there isn't a Canadian knife law app, would people be interested in one?

Don't know of an app like that.

As for local regulations, there are no Provincial variations.
There are some municipal by-laws though, like in Calgary where they give you a fine if they can see your knife.
They don't want to see the knife you are carrying.

•No person shall carry a knife that is visible in a public place.

Fines for violations of these regulations range between $50 and $300.

But there are no regional criminal laws you have to worry about.
If it is legal in Canada, it is legal in all of Canada. :)

Hmm, that is interesting. Thank you, so it seems primarily bylaws are the only difference. Would you find such app helpful if you were traveling?

Something that listed municipal by-laws about knives could be handy. :)
I sure wouldn't want a $300 fine if they could see my knife.

I have the knife rights app for the US. It has a disclaimer right on it. Don't substitute it for looking at the actual law of where you are going. Find the actual laws and look at them. To do otherwise and rely on an app only is not very smart. I use the knife rights app for reference. More to remind me of the laws I've actually read. That said, I am not that concerned about knife laws. As long as you aren't being an idiot with your knife you are safe in the US almost everywhere. Some big cities suck though. I'm far more concerned about firearm laws. Those I follow to the letter. Thankfully most states here honor my CCW. And I damn sure know which ones don't. No app for that. Actual law.

Yes, an App can only be a guidance as you never know what type of mood somebody might me in lol. But, lets say you were travelling to Canada from the US, would you be interested in an app that, makes your search easier to know what is, and is not allowed in Canada?

There is an unwritten knife law in Toronto. Because of some misinformation; the police here believe you open a pocket knife and lay the blade flat on your palm. Then if that pocket knife is longer than your palm is wide they believe it is an illigal knife. This is already a wildly inaccurate test as everyone has different palm sizes. This is because they believe a folding knife is not supposed to be more than 3.5 inches. If your blade is longer than this they will try to take it away. Some measure just the edge even not the whole blade. They will also try to whip your knife and if the blade opens they will use that as a reason to confiscate it.

They generally will take away fixed blades as a matter of course.

Generally they will not check a pocket knife worn clipped to the pocket, especially if you are dressed like you spend alot of time at home depot.

ALL of these are not actual Canadian laws or even Ontario laws.

Here is an article apparently written by a lawyer on Canadian knife laws. http://ejmas.com/tin/2004tin/tinart_agnew_0104.html

Interesting, never heard of that. But, not sure what to say honestly. The app would not be a knife rights app, it would just be stating the legal restrictions. Also, that article you linked is 12 years old... I'm sure some things stated in there have chanced since then.

No nothing has changed pretty much. Thats why I linked it, it is still valid. Canadian knife laws dont change much.

Atleast not to my knowledge.

Anyways, seems like there isn't too much of a need for this app/not my interest in it.

No. I also don't think mood belongs in this conversation. You are missing my point. I'd want to get the law from the government. I would in fact do that before I left. That is in fact what I do when traveling no matter where I go. The app would only be a reminder and not a primary source of information, thus the disclaimer the the knife rights app has.
