Hey guys! So I've had some issues with finding steel in Canada for my knifemaking. (Now I just want to say this before anyone gets upset.) I have no issue with Canadian knifemaker supply Ltd. ( https://www.knifemaker.ca ) but because I'm just a beginner knifemaker and am just starting to get commissions for some knives, and I want to use some higher quality steel rather than "practice steel" aka welding steel. I have recently bought 6 feet of 440C stainless from them.
I have bought the most expensive way to buy some tool steel. I went to the metal supermarket and they were very helpful but I think that paying $85 cad for a 1/8 2" 36" piece of O1 tool steel is a little much!

I have looked at NJ steel baron and they just don't ship to Canada it seems.

I live in Edmonton Alberta so any place that is within that area is great and if they ship for a good price then that is great too.

I'm looking for some basic carbon steel that is anything from 3/32" to 1/4" and 1 1/2" to 5" wide( anything from 1055-51600 carbon content )

In 10 years of doing this I haven’t found anyone in Canada cheaper or with better service than Rob. Your best option is probably going to be picking up some 80CrV2 from him unless you are sending out your heat treating. If you plan to heat treat yourself it’s also a better choice than O1. Last time I checked it was about $12 per foot CAD, is good steel, and can be heat treated without sending it out to professionals. I have looked around and haven’t found anyone cheaper than him, or with more selection.

Okay, cool. Well, I'm going to look into some of that steel. I have no clue how to HT it but you know, ill just have to do one search and then I can knife immediately!!!

There is lots of good info on heat treating it available now. I have been using it myself and liking it, and while I am using a digital kiln, a forge can also do an acceptable job. I’m not saying that you have to deal with them, just letting you know that for what they carry, and the price, I haven’t found anyone who could get it to me cheaper or quicker than they could. It’s also handy that I can get pins and liner material and stuff from them at the same time to save some shipping. Cross border usually looks cheaper until we get nailed with duty and brokerage and all that wonderful stuff.
