I completed this knife for the CKG show. It was shown in the show report by Robert, and there was a question regarding the inlay panel.
I have been researching old methods of decorating sword blades and fittings. Three methods that were used to obtain a blue/black finish consisted of hot sand, charcoal and rust blueing. Each of these provides a different effect. Sand and charcoal blueing involves heat soaking the steel for several hours. The slightest amount of contamination in the packing material will result in a flawed finish. Because of this it took several attempts to achieve an even finish on the panels of this knife. For each attempt I had to sand off the finish and re-polish the steel. Given the amount of sanding required to remove the finish, I am confident that it will stand up well to normal handling. It It is interesting to note that the colour will change depending on the angle that it is viewed from.
I will be using these new (for me) finishes in some of my upcoming new designs.
Thank you Murray for taking the photo before the knife was sold.

Anytime I get to see or look at your work, words escape me. What a pleasure. Nice picture Murray!

I love it when you post your work, Wolfe!
That charcoal blued steel looks amazing in the picture, must be quite spectacular in person.

I was lucky enough to see and handle this knife in person. Not only does it look great, but it is so smooth with a very crisp lock up.

Can't imagine the work and knowledge involved to create such excellence.
Thanks for posting/sharing, Wolfe.

Exquisite knife, what a treat! Your hard work definately paid off. I can't wait to see your new designs using this technique.
I assume the inlay is carbon steel instead of 416 stainless?
