Canadian Laws on Assisted Flippers to Change

So apparently a bill was just passed that makes assisted folders with flipper tabs illegal. Has anyone heard anything about this or know specific details, links, etc? I think this is going to horribly hurt brands like Kershaw. Any thoughts on the subject feel free to share them. I personally think this is ridiculous and is just further limiting us from what we can have in our country.

Source for this quote on a new bill?

The only thing that seems to have been out in the news lately is Credit Card knives.

Now we know CBSA is grabbing a lot of flippers and their expert is calling them switchblades but that's not a new law.

That's probably the thing he's thinking of.
The tribunal upheld the stupid thing, but that's a Border Services decision, not the law of the land.

Probably best to avoid assisted opening knives at the border these day.

I just got a letter today from customs claiming my shirogorov is a prohibited weapon and classified it as an "automatic".

Canadian Customs has been rather insane lately.
I really recommend buying folders that are already in the country these days, as the Border folks are using a whole different set of laws than the rest of the country now.

Pretty ridiculous that they consider a unassisted flipper as an auto. I guess folders with thumb stud/disk/holes are next since those open just as fast in some cases.

I'll be travelling to Canada in a few weeks.
Are there any limits on poses sion or is it only on carrying?
I might have some assisted folder and a fixed knife in my suit case but wouldn't walk with it through Toronto.

I'm sure you will be fine as long as you use discretion. Our laws are pretty relaxed on blade length restrictions and flippers, and assisted knives are fine unless customs deem them automatics, which they are not.

I carried a Spyderco Military and an Emerson Karambit last time I was walking around downtown Toronto. :)

The border is really your only point of concern, and it seems some of them are being douchey about knives with flippers and assisted opening lately.

Wow. Now you guys got me thinking of carrying too. What if I want to go to things like Niagra Falls or the glass platform on the tower in Toronto or one of the cool museums? Would I have to leave my knife at home or do they not care too?

I was reading about the CN Tower, and they don't want knives there, and seem to have metal detectors.
Last time I was at the museums, no issues.
The huge malls have no problems with knives.

In Niagara falls, last time I went to the Skylon Tower there, I had a Spyderco Kris in my pocket with no issues.
Same with Marineland.

They're worried about terrorism at the CN Tower, so they even installed explosives sniffers.
Almost all other public places aren't really worried about such things.

If you want to go to a specific attraction, just check their website first, and it'll generally let you know if it'll be an issue or not. :)

More ridiculous stupid laws by ignorant people that will do absolutely nothing but hurt the law abiding.
I recently got back from Niagara Falls and I carried on the NY side but not when we went to Ontario.

I really feel for our northern neighbors and the distrust our governments have of citizens. Down here, we have a complex series of prohibitions that cause problems, yet solves nothing. Then, we try to fix the created problems in a series of mis-steps and setbacks, yet not overturn the original laws that got things in motion. Today, one can have no criminal intention, be an honest person and present no risk to others, yet we can easily get marked as criminals. When I travel, I have to check the state of the law over and over. I traveled to a state that had reciprocity for my concealed carry permit only to find it was rescinded a month later due to political problems between our states. If I had not checked, I could have found myself in prison for something I legally did only weeks earlier. Additionally, I have automatic knives, which I can legally carry in Kansas, but I live very close to Missouri, which recognizes my conceal carry permit, but not my right to carry an automatic knife (unless I have only one arm). I can cross a parking lot and become a criminal.

Knife Rights effectively repealed MO's switchblade ban in 2012, a year prior to our removing the ban in KS. However, still no preemption in MO, so you do have to be careful about local jurisdictions: http://www.kniferights.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=197

I spent 10 days in southern Ontario and 7 of those days were in the Toronto area and had no issues. I carried my folding Buck Kalinga 419 on my belt with a Spyderco Police clipped to my belt. I got a few looks though, mostly at my long gray beard and pony tail.

Has anyone in Canada got a mail order Kershaw folder with assisted opening ?

About 6 months ago I got both my OSOSweet and Zing SS back from Kershaw warranty repair with no issues. Also got my Buck Quickfire back about a month ago from their warranty dept.

That is absolutely ridiculous. I was planning on moving to Canada within a few years too, but not if they keep changing laws for the worst!
